Overview

Candidates are invited to apply for a fixed term maternity cover Emergency Medicine Consultant post. The successful applicant will join a team of 22 ED consultants delivering care across two EDs at Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH). We see approximately 145,000 ED attendances per year, with around 25% children. Gloucestershire Hospitals is the busiest Major Trauma Unit in the South West, with investment in a newly extended and refurbished Emergency Department and Acute Medical Unit completed in January 2024.

The departments have segregated paediatric areas and are supported by SDECs for medical and surgical specialties, co-located primary care services, 24/7 onsite PPCI, and interventional radiology at GRH.

The team delivers consultant‑led care from early morning until midnight with non‑resident on‑call overnight. Weekend work occurs on a 1 in 6 basis, managed via an annualised, self‑rostered job plan, which includes a fixed day off per week and a strategy to reduce antisocial hours for senior staff.

Responsibilities
  • Provide consultant‑led Emergency Department care across two sites (Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital).
  • Participation in a self‑rostered annualised job plan that optimises clinical cover and work/life balance, with monitoring of hours to ensure workload averages align with the plan.
  • Cover for colleagues during emergencies and ensure adequate service levels; maximum consultants away at any one time is managed to preserve patient care.
  • Contribute to on‑call arrangements: a 3% on‑call supplement (Category

    A) of a basic 10 PA salary and on‑call duties as allocated by the Trust.
  • Support and participate in department staffing and cover across medical and nursing teams, including involvement with the discharge and frailty teams and practice development activities.
  • Engage with ongoing service improvements and workforce planning to expand the ED consultant team to 22, and participate in strategic development as part of the Trust’s approach to innovation and transformation.
Qualifications
  • Qualified Emergency Medicine Consultant (or equivalent) with appropriate GMC registration and licensing to practice in the UK.
  • Experience with major trauma, paediatric ED care, and a broad range of emergency medical presentations.
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team and contribute to a high‑volume, busy ED environment.
Additional Information
  • The department is supported by a wide team including allied health professionals, nursing staff, psychiatrists, discharge and frailty teams, and practice development nurses.
  • Employer offers flexible working opportunities, generous annual leave, NHS pension, and a range of wellbeing and development initiatives as part of Gloucestershire Hospitals.
  • The Trust emphasizes an inclusive environment with opportunities for professional development, mentoring, and leadership growth.
