We are seeking an experienced and dependable Seasonal First Mate to support vessel operations during scheduled cruises out of Gloucester.
This role plays a key part in safe navigation, vessel readiness, and passenger experience. The First Mate works closely with the Captain and crew to ensure compliance with U.S. Coast Guard requirements and smooth day-to-day operations onboard.
Experience and Skills
Schedule & Availability
- Seasonal position with peak cruise operations from April through August, and additional cruises scheduled through December.
- Schedule varies based on cruise calendar
- Must be available at least one (1) hour prior to each cruise for pre-departure preparation
- Assist the Captain with safe operation and navigation of the vessel
- Operate and maneuver the vessel as directed (Captain's license not required)
- Support docking, undocking, anchoring, and line handling
- Conduct pre-cruise and post-cruise vessel checks
- Learn, lead, and participate in U.S. Coast Guard drills
- Maintain awareness of Coast Guard inspection requirements and safety compliance
- Assist with passenger safety briefings and onboard safety oversight
- Access and work in the engine room and pilot house as needed
- Communicate effectively with crew to ensure smooth cruise operation
- Actual compensation is commensurate with relevant skills and qualifications
- Salary range is $28-$38/hr
- Prior sea time with experience operating vessels 100 feet or larger
- Experience operating twin screw vessels
- Demonstrated ability to safely drive and maneuver a vessel
- Strong understanding of marine safety procedures
- Comfortable working in engine room and pilot house environments
- Reliable, safety-focused, and team-oriented
- TWIC Card (highly preferred but not required)
- Prior experience in passenger vessel or cruise operations
- Familiarity with U.S. Coast Guard inspections and drills
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to climb ladders and move safely around the vessel
- Ability to lift and carry equipment as needed
- Outdoor, marine environment
- Variable weather conditions
- Fast-paced during peak summer season
