Where You’ll Be Working

You’ll be part of the Statewide Eyesight Preschooler Screening (StEPS) program based at Gloucester Community Health Service. The location could be based at Forster Community Health Service or Taree Community Health Service to suit our ideal candidate. You’ll work largely independently in the community, while being supported by your local Child & Family / Community Health team and the broader StEPS network.

Your work will take you into preschools, childcare centres and clinic settings, building strong relationships with families, early childhood services and other health professionals across your local area.

About the Role

As an Enrolled Nurse – StEPS Vision Screener, you will provide monocular vision screening for 4–5-year-old children in childcare, preschool and clinic environments. Your role is to identify potential vision problems early and ensure children who need further assessment are referred appropriately, helping to support their learning and development.

Day to day, you will:

  • Travel to preschools, childcare centres and clinics within your allocated area
  • Set up, use and pack down vision screening equipment and ensure it is well maintained
  • Review consent forms, confirm eligible children and conduct child-friendly vision screens
  • Accurately document results and follow local protocols for referral and follow-up
  • Liaise with parents/carers, early childhood staff and other health professionals to support understanding and next steps

This permanent part-time role has flexibility in how your hours are worked across the week, and full training in the StEPS program will be provided.

About You

You are an Enrolled Nurse who enjoys working with children and families and values community-based care. You’re organised, self-motivated and comfortable working both independently and as part of a small, supportive team.

You bring:

  • Current registration with AHPRA as an Enrolled Nurse
  • Eligibility to drive in NSW and willingness to travel for work purposes
  • Experience working with children and an understanding of normal growth and development
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage parents and early childhood staff
  • The ability to plan your day, manage a schedule and maintain accurate documentation
  • Confidence using basic computer systems and a willingness to learn program-specific databases
