Overview
Operations Mechanic:
The primary function of this role is to provide safe, reliable, cost effective service for customers and stakeholders. To ensure adherence to compliance related tasks, provide good customer service. This position requires the ability to respond to gas leak emergency orders, investigate, identify, resolve, mitigate, or process for resolution. Part of that task requires being the first responder to incidents and working with emergency responders for local agencies and other entities.
The role involves potentially gaseous environments and wearing critical personal protective equipment.
- Leak investigation, pipe fitting, installing support brackets for metering sets and risers, restoring service to natural gas appliances, assess gas appliance operation and perform safety checks.
- Inform customers of findings and document notification.
- Locate underground company facilities; use small tools, hand drills, and hand digging; work in confined spaces (attics, crawl spaces, excavations, construction zones, rooftops, etc.).
- Work in residential, commercial, industrial settings, indoors and outdoors, 24/7 in all weather conditions.
- Respond to after-hours emergency callouts; maintain good communication with internal and external parties; proficient in computer and technology use.
- Demonstrate competencies in job tasks associated with this role.
- Operations Mechanic — must obtain certification as an Operations Mechanic and be qualified in all Operator Qualification tasks.
- Distribution Mechanic — must obtain certification as a Delivery Mechanic and be qualified in all Operator Qualification tasks.
- High School diploma or GED
- Valid Driver’s License and pass Company driving tests
- Welding experience; ability to work underground for long periods; fusion training a plus
- Valid CDL Driver’s license (Class
A) and DOT medical card
- Pass all required Operator Qualification certifications
- Maintain compliance with Pipeline Safety Drug and Alcohol testing program
- Demonstrate skills in: leak investigation, excavation equipment use, hazard identification, relighting appliances, pipe fitting, small tool use, hand digging with proper tooling, safe driving and safety initiatives
- Computer use, smartphone use, technology use, atlas page reading, and map reading
- Organizational daily planning; pass Company’s Field Operations Delivery Mechanic certification test
- Ability to smell odorant used to detect gas leaks
- Join IBEW local Union
- Good work ethic; self-motivated; able to comprehend and follow directions
- Ability to work in varying conditions (rough terrain, weather); operate basic equipment, machinery and tools
- Willingness to learn; mechanical aptitude; knowledge of operating departments (Sys Ops, Con Ops, & Corrosion)
- Ability to communicate well with co-workers and customers
- Experience operating fleet vehicles up to 10,000 lbs and heavy-duty equipment; construction site experience
- Good hand/eye coordination
Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically walk, ascend and descend stairs and ladders, stoop, bend, kneel, enter and exit tap holes, ditches, and/or excavations, and lift and transport weight in excess of 50 pounds. Have a keen sense of smell, hearing, vision and color identification. Required to work in various weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, and precipitation.
