Position: Heavy Equipment Mechanic III (Field Mechanic) - Glenwood Springs

Overview

This position is for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic III located in Glenwood Springs. The position is open only to Colorado state residents. New employees to the State are paid biweekly (26 pay periods per year). This role is eligible for a $500/month housing stipend. Starting base pay is typically $64,428–$67,848/year; with housing stipend added, pay is $70,428–$73,848/year. CDOT-owned housing may be available;

details provided in the interview stage. CDOT pays for and provides tools for mechanics.

About the Unit

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic III works in CDOT's Region 3, Section 2 Maintenance Unit. The Unit maintains the Colorado highway system and facilities to near-original conditions using available resources, to ensure safe travel for the public.

About The Position

This journey-level Equipment Mechanic inspects, diagnoses, troubleshoots, modifies, and repairs light and heavy trucks and snow/road repair equipment. Diagnoses and repairs systems such as transmissions, brakes, electrical, ignition, fuel, hydraulic, and others. Equipment includes 10-ton snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, 6x6 and 4x4 trucks, snow blowers, and mower tractors.

CDOT pays for and provides tools for mechanics.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Diagnoses problems, disassembles units, inspects components, repairs or replaces parts, and reassembles units in brakes, drive, electrical, hydraulic, air, steering and suspension systems, engines, and computer-controlled sanders and de-icing systems; AVL systems.
  • Performs preventive maintenance including routine checks, inspections and adjustments (fluids, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, clutches), changing filters and oil, lubricating, tuning engines, servicing valves and fuel filters, testing fuel pressures, and adjusting injector heights and related components.
  • Maintains service logs and records; completes annual DOT safety inspections and DOT compliance for the vehicle fleet.
  • Diagnoses equipment components for defects using test equipment, test drives vehicles, and inspects for leaks.
  • Fabricates, modifies, and installs equipment or replacement parts; designs and fabricates parts/tools for unique or emergency needs.
  • Sets up and installs new equipment per CDOT specifications; maintains records for maintenance and inspections; orders parts and materials; prepares SAP work orders and material estimates.
  • Maintains safety knowledge and complies with safety procedures; attends safety trainings and tailgate talks; pursues ongoing training.
  • Participates in regional trainings, meetings, and equipment vendor commissioning trainings; maintains knowledge of equipment, tools, and materials and adapts to changes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
  • Expected schedule: 4 days of 10 hours each.
  • Approximately 40% field and 60% shop work.
  • Must respond to emergencies outside regular hours and work overtime, including weekends and holidays; some on-call time may be required.
  • Must provide a telephone number to reach you for emergencies.
  • Physical requirements:

    lift up to 70 lbs; kneel, bend, climb in/out of trucks; operate CDOT vehicles.
  • Frequent travel for field repairs and trainings; exposed to extreme temperatures, loud noises, fumes, dust, and other hazards; high voltage awareness required.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with air brakes within 6 months of hire.
