Job Overview
This position requires full proficiency in Armenian and English (read, write, and speak). Application materials must clearly demonstrate relevant skills and experience.
Provides simultaneous and consecutive oral translation/interpretation between English and the designated foreign language during a variety of District and school meetings, legal proceedings, hearings, and home visits to assist District personnel, outside agency representatives, students and parents. Translates complex and general written materials between English and the designated foreign language.
Current VacancyOne full-time position (8 hrs./day, 12 mos./yr.) with full benefits, in the Dual Immersion & English Learner Services Department, at the Administration Center. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
Daily assignments require travel between various district sites (Glendale, La Crescenta, Montrose). This position requires the possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and the use of personal transportation. Also, ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability and property damage insurance rates, and to maintain insurability.
Responsibilities (Examples of Duties)- Provides simultaneous and consecutive bilingual oral translation/interpretation at school, community, home visits, and District meetings such as Individualized Education Program conferences, Student Study Teams, expulsion/suspension hearings.
- Translates complex technical, legal, and medical documents including expulsion reports, IEP/Special Ed. assessments, psychologist's reports, and Board Policy, as well as general materials such as handbooks, manuals, forms, memos, correspondence. Prepares written translations of District meetings and conferences.
- Reviews and proofreads written translations submitted by District personnel and edits for accuracy of meaning, grammar, syntax, and idiomatic and cultural appropriateness.
- Operates translation headphone equipment (Silent Translator) to facilitate simultaneous interpretations at District meetings.
- Utilizes a computerized bilingual word processing program for written translations and subsequent file retention.
- One year of experience in composing, editing, and translating materials in English and the designated foreign language and providing consecutive or simultaneous oral translation or interpretations during group meetings and in one-to-one situations.
- Computer skills, including adequate proficiency in using Microsoft Word and other standard software for bilingual translation.
- Written and oral proficiency in additional languages.
- Any other combination of education, training and experience that could likely provide the desired skills, knowledge or abilities may be considered.
Regularly works in an office environment; occasionally outside; will be required to use a personal vehicle in the course of duties; will be required to attend evening meetings and some travel; and may be required to work overtime. Work environment is generally clean and the noise level is usually moderate.
Physical DemandsDexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer and other office equipment; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, or crouch to file; seeing to view a computer monitor and read a variety of materials; and hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the phone. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, some outdoor activity and exposure to outside weather conditions.
