Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic
Overview
The Role:
The position performs intermediate maintenance and repair work, including routine mechanical work and minor overhauls to a wide variety of fleet equipment. This is the second of a four-level classification series of fleet technicians with progressively more responsible duties.
- Repairs and preventative maintenance on various gasoline and diesel-powered heavy-duty equipment such as solid waste trucks, tractors, heavy-duty trucks, and fire apparatus.
- Repairs and maintains all vehicle systems, including engine, transmission, driveline, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical, HVAC, and hydraulic systems.
- Performs major and minor repairs and maintenance on a variety of heavy-duty equipment, including solid waste trucks, construction equipment, bucket trucks, backhoe/loaders, street sweepers, and fire apparatus.
- Performs major and minor repairs and maintenance to fire apparatus pumps, nozzles, gauges, valves, generators, and systems to ensure performance under emergency conditions, and prepares firetrucks for annual certified inspection.
- Mentors Fleet Technicians with general repairs of fire apparatus and other fleet equipment as assigned.
- Works on assigned schedule: 2nd shift, Monday through Friday, 2:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
FLSA non-exempt, overtime applies for hours over 40 per week. Grade 316 with an hourly salary between $27.5197 and $41.2798.

Regular status positions offer:
- 10.5 paid holidays per year, plus an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave per calendar year
- Vacation leave accrual: 5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours/year); increases to 6.12 hours after 5 years; caps at 7.6 hours after 10 years
- Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours/year)
- Days per year estimates are based on an 8-hour work day
Participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Contribution is mandatory (current rate 12%).
Requirements & Qualifications- Five (5) years of experience as a skilled equipment mechanic in automotive, diesel, hydraulic, electrical, or industrial equipment repairs. A completed accredited automotive or diesel program may substitute for two years of experience. Minimum of two current ASE certifications.
- Knowledge of mechanical trades, safety procedures, welding, and handling hazardous materials.
- Ability to mentor others, interpret manuals/diagrams, estimate repair time and cost, diagnose defects, prepare records, and communicate effectively.
- Valid Arizona Driver's License.
- Ability to work day or evening shifts as assigned; standby for holidays/callbacks as needed.
- Must obtain air conditioning repair certification within 60 days of hire and emissions testing certification within 6 months of hire.
- Must provide personal tools; some assignments require Class A/B CDL with endorsements within 60 days of hire.
- Safety-sensitive position; drug and alcohol testing and post-offer physical required; employer covers testing costs.
