Position: After-School Literacy Program Coach (Pendergast)

After‑School Literacy Program Coach

Employment: Part‑time

Pay: $18‑21/hour

Reports To: Program Coordinator

Work Hours: 5‑10 hours per week during the school year

Benefits: Semesterly merit‑based raises (up to $0.50 per semester, capping at $21/hour) plus professional development and mentorship opportunities

FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt

Summary

The Program Coach delivers the Read Better Be Better after‑school literacy program, typically being the sole certified RBBB employee on site and facilitating a program of up to 32 students. The Coach may run the RBBB K‑1 program (Kindergarten/1st‑grade readers with 4th/5th‑grade leaders) and/or the 2‑3 program (2nd/3rd‑grade readers with middle‑school leaders).

Key Responsibilities
  • Attend RBBB orientation and Program Coach trainings prior to placement.
  • Ensure all program materials are prepared, in good repair, and ready for student arrival.
  • Take class attendance.
  • Facilitate Read Better Be Better activities included in the curriculum for the duration of each session.
  • Encourage student participation to enhance experience.
  • Ensure all RBBB procedures and program structure are followed.
  • Wrap up each session and dismiss students following school procedures.
  • Return the site to order and carefully store all program materials for the next use.
  • Train and monitor student leaders as necessary.
  • Maintain general communication with school certified staff to optimize student experience and performance.
  • Effectively communicate program successes and challenges to the Program Coordinator.
  • Attend weekly off‑site coach meetings.
  • Attend all‑team mandatory meetings at RBBB headquarters each semester.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned that are required of the employee in this job.

  • Maintain a good attendance record.
  • Punctuality.
Required Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Basic computer/technology skills including email and applications used for communication, program attendance, and payroll.
  • IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card (RBBB offers reimbursements for application and fingerprint service fees).
Preferred Education & Experience
  • Enrollment in a relevant degree program preferred (e.g., teaching, educational studies, youth & early childhood development, social justice, social work, etc.).
  • Experience working with children in a classroom setting preferred.
Work Environment
  • This position operates in an elementary school library or classroom setting.
Physical Demands
  • This position involves moving around a school and classroom setting.
  • Transporting a wagon holding books and program materials that weighs up to 60 pounds around the classroom and sometimes between buildings.
Travel
  • Travel to assigned school sites.
  • Travel to RBBB main office for meetings as necessary.
  • Travel to other designated sites for RBBB meetings and professional development.
