To provide technical assistance, maintenance and laboratory support to academic and student service users. Work under guidance of a senior technical supervisor to support the smooth and effective running of our Physiology and Pharmacology teaching laboratories and related teaching activities.
Main Duties and Responsibilities- Provide technical support to academics and students across Physiology, Pharmacology and related disciplines. Contribute to the overall smooth and efficient running of the teaching labs to ensure an excellent experience for service users.
- Carry out a range of technical support activities including the use of specialist equipment and software, systems, procedures, protocols, models and/or techniques. Contribute to the creation and development of new technical resources and/or ways of working as directed by relevant senior staff. Identify, propose and implement technical solutions to a range of practical problems.
- Keep clear and accurate technical records and, where relevant, produce concise written summaries of results for senior staff. Analyse and interpret data using standard procedures and present findings accurately.
- Contribute to the safe and well‑organised functioning of the laboratory. Maintain laboratory areas appropriately and identify and rectify any technical faults/problem. Ensure that consumables and equipment are appropriately stocked and maintained, preparing teaching materials as required.
- Provide guidance to service users in the best application and operation of technical resources.
- Keep up to date with advances in Physiology, Pharmacology and related disciplines and seek to apply this knowledge to technical activities to further enhance the learning experience and/or contribute to the delivery of teaching.
- Work flexibly as part of the Education Hub Technical Team to meet objectives as agreed with the Technician‑in‑Charge of the facility; work in other areas as required to support teaching, training and preparation.

Essential
- A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 5 or 6 [National 5 or 6, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3] or equivalent in Biology, Chemistry, English and Maths, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
- A2 HNC/HND in Applied Science (Biology) or equivalent.
Desirable
- B1 Degree in Physiology, Pharmacology, or a related discipline.
Essential
- C1 Detailed technical knowledge of Physiology, Pharmacology or related disciplines systems, equipment, protocols, processes and procedures.
- C2 Demonstrable technical skills aligned to Physiology, Pharmacology or related disciplines.
- C3 Up to date knowledge of relevant laboratory Health and Safety legislation/policies.
- C4 Demonstrable ability in standard software e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, Zoom.
- C5 Strong foundational knowledge of computers and software with the ability to develop technical proficiency in use and troubleshooting laboratory specific software used in teaching.
- C6 Good interpersonal and written communication skills.
- C7 Ability to work effectively with others, including own team and lab users to meet objectives.
- C8 Ability to plan and prioritise workload to meet competing demands.
- C9 Ability to work independently, including the ability to use initiative and judgement to resolve problems.
- C10 Accuracy and attention to detail.
Essential
- E1 Demonstrable work experience in a similar technical role, with similar responsibilities.
- E2 Experience of contributing to the creation or development of technical resources or ways of working.
- E3 Experience of planning and organising own workload to meet the needs of service users.
Desirable
- F1 Experience and/or training in manual handling.
- F2 Experience and/or training in First Aid.
