Role

An opportunity has arisen for a fixed‑term vacancy within PICU for a Band 5 Staff Nurse. Previous PICU experience is desirable although not essential as training will be offered to the successful candidate. This 22‑beded unit cares for a variety of patients including emergency and elective surgery, cardiac services, orthopaedics, trauma, general medical, oncology, ENT, neurology and neurosurgery, and plastic surgery with responsibility for lead service provision throughout Scotland and referrals from other centres and Europe.

As part of a multidisciplinary team, the post holder will have responsibility for assessment of care needs, development and implementation of care programmes, and evaluation of these programmes to ensure high‑quality care.

Conditions for application
:
Minimum requirement is Part 8 or 15 on the NMC register. Part 1 on the NMC register must be competent in looking after adult ICU patients. Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential to become part of the multidisciplinary team. You must have a live NMC UK pin in order to be considered for this post.

  • Full‑time and part‑time positions available
  • Shift pattern: 07:30‑20:00 / 19:30‑08:00
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a high standard of nursing care within the clinical area, ensuring patient needs are assessed, care planned, implemented, evaluated, and that patients/carers are consulted and involved.
  • Maintain patient records within agreed standards and ensure high‑quality record keeping.
  • Contribute to the development of care programmes and advise junior staff regarding treatment of complex patient groups.
  • Delegate tasks with due regard to individuals’ capabilities, using available skill mix appropriately.
  • Ensure patient care is individualized to encompass spiritual and cultural needs of children and families.
  • Assume responsibility for the management of daily operational duties in the ward, including deployment and supervision of staff, in the absence of the senior charge nurse or deputy.
  • Workload is determined by service needs; report to the senior charge nurse for clinical guidance, professional management, work review, and formal appraisal of performance.
  • Demonstrate awareness of effective resource use, including staff, supplies, and departmental budget.
Qualifications
  • Candidates must be educated at degree level with child or adult branch and have an interest in critical care nursing.
  • Experience is desirable.
