Key Responsibilities

Clinical

  • To provide a high standard of nursing care within the clinical area to ensure that patient needs are assessed, care planned, implemented and evaluated, and that there is consultation and involvement of patient/carers.
  • Responsible for maintaining patient records within agreed standards and ensuring high quality record keeping within area of responsibility.
  • Contributes to the development of programmes of care, and provides advice to junior staff concerning the treatment of complex patient groups.
  • To delegate staff with due regard to individuals capabilities utilizing available skill mix appropriately.
  • To ensure that patient care is individualised to encompass spiritual and cultural needs of the child and family.
  • Provide the shared objectives of the multidisciplinary team by working closely to ensure that best practice is achieved.
  • Promote the interface between hospital and community to provide a seamless service for the child and family.

Management

  • In the absence of the senior charge nurse/deputy assume responsibility for the management of daily operational responsibilities in the ward, including the deployment and supervision of staff to ensure smooth running of the ward.
  • Workload is determined by the needs of the service. The post holder will be responsible to the senior charge nurse for clinical guidance and professional management, work review and formal appraisal of performance.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of effective use of resources, including staff, supplies and departmental budget.
  • Reports untoward incidents to senior colleagues.
  • Assist in the management of nurse staffing, bed management and incident reporting issues, communicate changes to the hospital clinical co-ordinator.
  • Participate in link nurse system as required.

Clinical Governance

  • Every employee, contractor or self employed person working has a legal duty to take all reasonable care for their own health and safety as well as that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.
  • Contribute as part of the multidisciplinary team, to the awareness and maintenance of policies, procedures, standards and protocols of the area to ensure adherence to, and delivery of the highest level of patient care at all times.
  • Develop the role by using evidence-based practice, and continuously improve their own knowledge, following PREP guidelines.

Training, Education

  • Participate in the provision of clinical practice for pre-registration and appropriate post-registration nursing to fulfil curriculum requirements and ensure that appropriate educational opportunities are provided.
  • Participate in ongoing personal and staff development needs and that professional education and research needs are identified and met.
  • Participate in the education and training of children and families within the clinical area to allow a smooth transition from hospital care to home care.
  • To participate in regional/national nursing event in order to further knowledge and shared best practice.
  • Participates in preceptorship/mentorship.

Research

  • Awareness of research within the specified area.
  • Ensure the quality of patient care is assessed and implemented to maintain standards of care given to patients and their families by participating in clinical audit and participating in research as appropriate.
  • Promote research awareness and evidence based care.
  • Work within the research governance arrangements to support audit of practice.
