Overview

ESTATE MANAGER
, WILTSHIRE

A working farm and family home set in 1,400 acres of rolling chalk downland, regarded as one of the premier sporting estates in the UK and consists of:

  • 1,100 acres of mixed–use land
  • Private principal residence and formal gardens
  • Recreational lakes, cabins and amenities
  • Forestry, agriculture and environmental land
  • An exceptional sporting estate
  • Early–stage hospitality and lifestyle ventures
  • 21 full–time staff and contractors
  • Established household team and seasonal hospitality support

The Estate continues to develop and diversify and at the heart of their strategy lies the core objective of continuing the positive stewardship of the Estate.

Candidate Profile

We are seeking an exceptional Estate Manager to lead this mixed private and commercial estate with full operational oversight across three integrated pillars:

  • The principal's private enjoyment of the house, gardens and wider estate
  • A developing hospitality and lifestyle portfolio, including third–party partnerships
  • A mixed bird shoot, regarded as one of the finest in the UK

The successful candidate will ensure the estate operates seamlessly, commercially effectively and in balance. They will look to drive performance and long–term value while safeguarding the principal's privacy, standards and vision. This highly motivated and commercially minded Estate Manager will demonstrate proven estate management expertise and a strong commercial acumen to focus on a wide range of highly varied projects including a hospitality focus.

He/she will have a proven track record in managing a substantial team and delivering commercial results within a diverse rural business, and an ambassadorial mind–set, capable of managing a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.

The suitable individual will be:

  • A proven Estate Manager with a number of years of experience and a track record of demonstrable achievement in complex estate management including diversified projects including luxury hospitality accompanied by sporting management.
  • Comparable private / commercial environment experience will also be considered.
  • An excellent communicator with a people focus and developed sense of empathy accompanied by natural diplomacy and common sense.
  • Strong commercial acumen and exceptional financial literacy combined with a proven ability to successfully lead multi–disciplinary teams in the delivery of enterprise objectives.
  • High emotional intelligence and discretion is essential.
  • Interest in the countryside, outdoor pursuits, community affairs, able to demonstrate developed relationships.
  • Passion for sustainability and biodiversity, proven through qualifications and results.
  • Able to demonstrate an attention to detail balanced against the need for strategic thinking.
  • A strong understanding of compliance requirements whilst displaying 'can–do' attitude.
  • Not looking for a '9–5' role, happy and able to demonstrate a commitment that goes beyond this.
  • A high degree of autonomy and self–motivation whilst demonstrating an ability to operate comfortably in an environment of evolving priorities and multiple stakeholders.
Job Purpose

The key dimensions of the role will be:

Commercial & Financial Oversight

Budgeting, forecasting and cashflow management with associated monthly reporting on commercial performance. Ensuring the sporting and hospitality activities operate with financial discipline whilst identifying appropriate opportunities.

Sporting activities

Oversight of the 36 let days per season, ensuring the estate maintains its standing as one of the UK's leading sporting estates delivering the finest hospitality.

Private Estate Operations

Maintaining exceptional readiness and presentation for the principal and be able to manage competing estate demands to preserve privacy and enjoyment. Often in compressed timelines.

Built Environment & Infrastructure

Leading capital project oversight, preventative and reactive maintenance, utilities, infrastructure and contractor management.

Land & Environmental Stewardship

Overseeing farming, forestry and land management with engagement with external advisers and specialists.

Governance & Compliance

Managing and maintaining Health & Safety, insurance and regulatory compliance and documentation.
