The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA) is the national governing body for pipe bands in Scotland and Northern Ireland. A registered charity (SC018153) and company limited by guarantee, the RSPBA represents around 200 member bands and plays a central role in preserving, promoting, and developing pipe band music and culture both nationally and internationally.
The Association has an annual turnover of approximately £750,000, with income largely derived from sponsorship and membership fees. Day‑to‑day operations are supported by a small administrative team based at the RSPBA Headquarters in Glasgow, led by a full‑time Chief Executive Officer, the Business Manager, and three part‑time staff. Governance is provided by a volunteer Board of Directors, elected by regional branches.

The Role inesis?The RSPBA is seeking an accomplished and respected individual to serve as President
. This is a high‑profile, ambassadorial, and advisory role suited to someone with a strong affinity for Scottish heritage and pipe band culture, combined with significant professional credibility and networks.
The President plays an important non‑executive role in supporting the Board of Directors, Chairman, and CEO, while acting as a figurehead and advocate for the Association’s aims and values.
Key Attributes- A genuine passion for, or strong connection to, pipe band culture and Scottish heritage
- Established business or corporate networks
- A public profile and personal credibility that commands respect
- An understanding of, and empathy with, volunteer‑led organisations
- Experience in building corporate partnerships, securing sponsorship, or fundraising (highly desirable)
- Preside over meetings of the Board of Directors when invited by the Chairman
- Provide non‑executive advice to the Board of Directors on matters relating to the business of the Association
- Offer guidance and support to the Chairman, CEO, and Executive Committee
- Promote goodwill, harmony, and unity within the RSPBA
- Act as an Ambassador for the RSPBA, championing its aims, objectives, and ideals
- Represent the RSPBA at official functions and speak on behalf of the Association when appropriate 72954;
- Promote international relations and cooperation with other piping, drumming, pipe band, and musical organisations
- Leverage personal and professional connections to advance the interests of the RSPBA, particularly in developing relationships with potential sponsors and commercial partners
- Undertake any additional duties as requested by the Board of Directors
- Attendance at major pipe band contests, five per year, including the World Pipe Band Championships
- Attendance at Board meetings (four per year) and the Annual General Meeting
- Optional attendance at committee meetings (most meet quarterly; the Finance & Internal Management Committee meets bi‑monthly)
This is a zero‑salary position. Reasonable expenses may be reimbursed in line with RSPBA policy.
