You will be joining the learning disability nursing workface at a very exciting time of progress and development. Within NHS GGC learning disability nurses will work either within inpatient or community services.
The role of a Learning Disability Nurse is to support individuals and their families to ensure health needs are met and individuals are able to reach their potential and live meaningful lives.
As a Learning Disability Nurse you will work across the lifespan. Our population has a diverse range of health needs from early diagnosis to end of life care. You will play a vital and unique role working as part of a multi-disciplinary team within a health care setting. You will contribute to:
- Assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating holistic, person centred care.
- Reduce health inequalities of people with learning disabilities.
- Reduce barriers to health and care services to promote an individual’s wellbeing.
- Support people with a learning disability to live a fulfilling life.

Supporting your new career journeyThroughout your first year in post you will undertake the newly registered nurse programme which supports your transition from pre-registered student to registered, confident and capable health professional. This includes corporate and specialist induction, a period of preceptorship, clinical supervision sessions and Flying Start, Scotland’s national development programme for all newly registered nurses, midwives and allied health professionals.
As a Band 5 Nurse you’ll find that you will have the opportunity to work with really amazing nursing colleagues with day‑time guidance provided by your peers, Senior Charge Nurses / Nurse Team Leads and Lead Nurses.
Our Clinical Nurse Education Team are dedicated to supporting you in the clinical area encouraging your development with regards to knowledge, skills and career progression.
Living and Working in Glasgow and the surrounding areaWhilst you may not be familiar with Glasgow and the surrounding areas as a place to live and work, the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area has many attractions. The West of Scotland combines cosmopolitan charm, lush countryside and soothing seaside.
