, a state‑of‑the‑art facility designed to serve communities for generations.
As Deputy Design Manager you will sit at the heart of project delivery, working closely with architects, structural engineers, MEP consultants, specialist subcontractors and construction delivery teams. Your role will help shape and manage design solutions that are:
- Coordinated
- Buildable
- Safe
- Maintainable
- Compliant with contract, technical and statutory requirements
This position offers the chance to step beyond discipline‑specific engineering and gain hands‑on experience across the full design lifecycle, from early concepts to construction and handover.
What You’ll Be Doing Design Coordination & Assurance- Review multidisciplinary design information for accuracy, clarity, compliance and buildability.
- Identify risks early and support technical problem‑solving across the project.
- Track and manage design requirements in alignment with client and contractual expectations.
- Support the development of design programmes and reporting structures.
- Coordinate deliverables and ensure progress against key project milestones.
- Lead or contribute to design reviews, technical workshops and stakeholder meetings.
- Work closely with the Design Manager to drive design strategy.
- Support the construction team with technical queries, quality assurance and commissioning.
- Mentor apprentices, trainees and early‑career design managers.
- Contribute to risk and opportunity management.
- Ensure designs meet statutory, regulatory and assurance requirements.
- Maintain alignment with Laing O'Rourke's governance procedures and tools.
- Qualifications (Recommended):
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Chartered or working towards chartership with a recognised professional body.
- Experience:
- Experience working with design consultants and multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of building systems, construction methods and materials.
- On‑site or delivery experience is beneficial but not essential.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to influence and collaborate across diverse teams.
- Enjoy solving complex technical challenges.
- Are comfortable working across disciplines and prioritising collaborative progress.
- Want to develop leadership capability and broaden your impact.
- Embrace new technology, digital tools and innovative approaches to design.
