The University of Glasgow's Undergraduate Medical school is seeking a Senior Clinician with a rich experience in delivering clinical education to become our Clinical Placement Champion for the Undergraduate Medical School (UMS) MBChB Year 3-5. The role attracts 1 Programmed Activity (PA), reports to the Head of the UMS, Professor Malcolm Shepherd and works in partnership with Deputy Head of the UMS Clinical Placement (i.e

MBChB Years 3-5). This is a secondary appointment for an initial term of 4 years, undertaken alongside the postholder’s substantive role, with appropriate workload adjustments agreed.

Job Purpose

You will support the Head of the Undergraduate Medical School in delivering a strategy, integrating the student voice into wider Undergraduate Medical School operations, with a particular focus on enhancing the clinical placement experience and improving our National Student Survey (NSS) performance. You will assist in the development of and strengthen reciprocal pathways for feedback, working closely with the academic team in MB4 and 5 and in partnership with the Head and Clinical Deputy Head of school.

You will work to implement outputs from student, staff and national surveys on student voice strategies and inform meaningful and measurable improvements during the clinical placement years. Working with academic and PSS clinical years teams the post will support students navigating clinical placement, providing advice including but not limited to, allocations, learning, assessments, health and wellbeing.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and lead a clinical placement student experience strategy informed by the UMS student‑intern ‘Student Voice’ project, stakeholder surveys, and national guidance.
  • Implement the strategy with a particular focus on strengthening bi‑directional communications between students undertaking clinical placement and central University Academics, ensuring transparent feedback loops and demonstrable action.
  • Work collaboratively and participate actively in supporting the clinical years teams in the review, revision and development of the undergraduate medical programme within the framework of and ensuring the alignment with:
    • The requirements and standards of the General Medical Council (GMC).
    • Evidence‑informed best educational practice.
    • The University of Glasgow Learning and Teaching Strategy.
    • Feedback on performance of graduates in clinical practice.
    • Formal and informal student feedback mechanisms.
  • Be an active member of the UMS Executive and the Operational Management Committee, supporting school planning, governance, and quality enhancement processes.
  • Liaise and engage with the NHS staff involved in the delivery of the MBChB Programme, providing leadership and fostering strong partnership working across as required.
  • Actively promote and encourage scholarship and research in medical education, with particular emphasis on enhancing clinical placement experience.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Knowledge/Qualifications Essential
  • MB ChB, Higher degree, certificate of completion of higher training.
  • Extensive experience of Glasgow University Undergraduate Medical School curriculum and clinical placement operations.
  • Medical Education qualification.
Desirable
  • Knowledge of student voice frameworks and feedback.
Skills Essential
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategies and make informed strategic decisions, taking account of policies, multiple stakeholders and contextual factors.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent oral and presentation and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong people management and leadership skills.
  • Excellent organisational and workload management ability.
Experience Essential
  • Significant experience as a medical educator, including the design, delivery, evaluation and management of the medical curriculum.
  • Experience of involvement in service design and improvement.
  • Experience of planning and delivering CPD events/ workshops.
  • Proven leadership experience with a strong background in medical education.
Desirable
  • Substantial senior leadership
