Department Overview

The Cardiology Clinic is a multidisciplinary practice with primary locations at the Center for Health and Healing and Beaverton Clinics with some programmatic aspects on Marquam Hill. The practice cares for adults. The clinic cares for patients 18 and older with cardiac diseases. The RN is a key member of the multi-disciplinary patient care team, which includes physicians, advance practice providers, medical assistants, schedulers, and other clinical and management support staff.

The Cardiovascular Device RN is a registered nurse who is independently accountable for the effective management and coordination of care of patients with Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device (CIED), pacemakers, ICD, and Implantable Loop Recorders. The RN will partner with the Electrophysiology (EP) team and other clinical staff throughout OHSU to coordinate the care of cardiovascular patients with CIEDs. The RN will coordinate care in the outpatient setting for long term in person and remote monitoring.

The RN will provide and improve quality patient outcomes for the patient and families for the Cardiology Clinic in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

Function/Duties of Position
  • CLINICAL SERVICES:
    Working with the various members of the multi-interdisciplinary team in delivering outpatient care to patients with CIEDs:
  • Conduct interviews with patient, family, and other health care agencies to obtain past medical records and social and medical history to assess their understanding of the plan of care regarding cardiac monitoring devices.
  • Independently perform CIED interrogation in the outpatient setting
  • Problem solve device function, settings, arrhythmia episodes, and interventions.
  • Work closely with EP team and other multidisciplinary teams, ensuring quality CIED and medical follow up care.
  • Analyze clinical data and compose written CIED management summaries, clinic visit notes, and letters.
  • Triage patient clinical concerns, symptoms, or other relevant data in relation to their cardiac device care.
  • Communicate and problem solve with multidisciplinary team to solve complex patient care issues and CIED function.
  • Educate patient and family regarding all aspects of disease management and diagnostic and device management follow up.
  • Proactively review patient schedules to ensure efficiency in clinical workflows and identify and resolve potential conflicts.
  • Ensure appropriate resources are available to support patient care and procedures in the outpatient setting.
  • Educate patient and family on signs and symptoms that require a follow up telephone call or clinic visit.
  • Collaborate with medical faculty, nursing staff, and other health care agencies to facilitate patient and family needs.
  • Assist with accurate data collection and analysis to support Device Clinic charting platform, national registries, process improvement, and quality initiatives.
  • Assist with managing device alerts, advisories, recalls in partnership with multidisciplinary team and vendors.
OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT/COORDINATION OF MCS/VAD SERVICES:
  • Developing and maintaining the clinical pathways, standards, policy procedures and order sets for the care of patients with CEIDs.
  • Developing methods to best utilize the Cardiac Device and Electrophysiology resources to service inpatient, outpatient and OHSU staff.
  • Coordinating Cardiac Device patient care with other areas in the OHSU organization.
  • Coordinates Cardiac Device patient care with other Centers for patients who are traveling outside the OHSU service area.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience with emphasis on hospital adult cardiovascular patient care, including telemetry.
  • Proficiency in telemetry and rhythm interpretation.
  • Experience in performing CEID interrogation, interpretation, and device/patient monitoring.
  • Associate or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA)
  • Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
