This role applies data visualization best practices and design principles to ensure clarity, accessibility, and consistency across audiences—from the C‑suite to frontline staff. The position also leads design reviews, usability testing, and the development of organizational dashboard standards, ensuring that all visual analytics solutions align with governance policies, HIPAA compliance, and operational priorities.

By bridging technical development with user experience advocacy, the BI Developer plays a key role in delivering trusted, impactful data products that support strategic and operational decision‑making.

Candidates must be in Portland or Washington.

What you will do:
  • Design, build, and maintain interactive dashboards and data visualizations in Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools to deliver clear, actionable insights.
  • Apply data visualization best practices to ensure clarity, accessibility, and usability across devices and for diverse audiences.
  • Develop prototypes and iterate designs based on stakeholder feedback to continuously refine dashboard effectiveness.
  • Translate business requirements into precise metric definitions and implement aggregation logic at the semantic layer for accuracy and consistency.
  • Collaborate with BI Analysts and stakeholders to validate metric accuracy against source systems and business rules.
  • Maintain a centralized metrics catalog with standardized definitions and change history, working with analysts and stakeholders to ensure metrics align with official definitions.
  • Develop and optimize semantic models, calculated fields, and measures for both dashboard performance and interpretability.
  • Act as a user experience advocate by creating user profiles and designing dashboards tailored for multiple audiences and access levels, from the C‑suite to frontline staff, to ensure clarity, usability, and actionable insights.
  • Partner with Data Engineers to create data sources that are structured for efficient visualization and aggregation; create requests for data structure or dictionary updates when needed.
  • Collaborate with product owners, analysts, and stakeholders to refine requirements and enhance the user experience of data products.
  • Lead design review sessions and usability testing while setting and evolving organizational dashboard design standards.
  • Document visualization designs, wireframes, metric definitions, and usage guidelines to support consistency and knowledge sharing.
  • Ensure adherence to organizational data visualization standards and governance policies for quality, compliance, and consistency.
  • Deploy, configure, and administer Power BI Data Gateway, including setup and management of data source connections, scheduled refreshes, and performance optimization.
Qualifications:
  • Strong proficiency in Power BI, Tableau, or other enterprise BI visualization tools.
  • Proven experience designing and deploying interactive dashboards and visual analytics solutions.
  • Knowledge of DAX, MDX, Power Query or similar calculation languages for metric creation.
  • Experience designing reports and masking PHI in a HIPAA‑compliant environment preferred.
  • Healthcare Data experience required. Healthcare Revenue Cycle or Finance experience strongly preferred.

  • Proficiency in read‑only DML SQL for data exploration and validation.
  • Familiarity with data visualization best practices and UI/UX principles.
  • Experience collaborating with data engineers, data analysts, and end‑users to deliver production‑ready data products.
