Job Title:
Teacher - Teacher of the Visually Impaired
Purpose Statement
The job of Teacher - Visually Impaired is done for the purpose/s of diagnosing children with a vision disability, determine how the disability interferes with learning, and then with parents design and implement a program, to teach students to read, write, problem solve, compute, find information, think, work cooperatively with others as well develop functional and independent living skills, and to meet all district-required curriculum objectives as per a child's Individual Education Plan (IEP).
Essential Functions
* Collaborates with the classroom teacher, other regular and special education personnel, parents for the purpose of coordinating programs and services for students.
* Collaborates with the education staff (e.g. schedule time efficiently for assessment, instruction, planning, preparation of materials, travel, and conferences with relevant school and other key individuals, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring attendance and professional development is achieved.
* Conducts vision-related assessments and evaluations, including all initial assessments and re-evaluations (e.g. Conduct Functional Vision Assessment, Conduct Learning Media Assessment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring students are properly tested and receive proper accommodations.
* Documents observations, student performance and/or various activities for the purpose of providing a record for future reference by self and/or others.
* Establishes goals and objectives, and recommends the amount and level of service needed for students for the purpose of ensuring the student's best possible chance at achieving Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
* Evaluates students for the purpose of determining eligibility for vision services, according to the Wyoming Rules and Regulations Governing Students with Disabilities.
* Instructs identified students in a variety of topics (e.g. low vision and visual efficiency skills, Braille, knowledge, skills, and confidence to communicate the functional implications of their vision impairments with peers and others, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the vision-related instruction and services required to meet the individualized educational needs of students.
* Instructs students individually and in small groups for the purpose of improving learning skills, self care and physical development.
* Maintains records, files, supplies and aids for the purpose of providing for necessary materials in an efficient and timely manner.
* Prepares sequential and meaningful instruction geared to the student's assessed needs for the purpose of ensuring items determined by the IEP team with goals and objectives that include functioning, and motivational levels.
* Provides in-service training for school personnel regarding the individual needs of students who have visual impairments, and the need for adaptations, and services for the purpose of providing the information and tools necessary to perform proper services to the visually impaired students.
* Provides written reports for the purpose of documenting assessment outcomes and identify needs.
* Transcribes educational materials to Braille and large print formats for the purpose of making these materials accessible to students whose visual impairments preclude their reading the material by eyesight.
Other Functions
* Performs other duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring goals and objectives are met.

Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read
a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve
practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the
job include:
Braille transcription and print copy; and specialized Braille computer devices.
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet
changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job
include: operating equipment used in Braille transcription; operating standard office equipment including using
pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records; problem solving skills, imagination,
patience, reasoning, creativity, and judgment.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is
required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes;
