POSITION SUMMARY

This position may be located within a Hospital Facility, Patient Service Center (PSC), In Office Phlebotomy (IOP) or Mobile Diagnostic Services (MDS). It may be responsible for providing coverage at multiple locations and for the collection and receipt of biological specimens into the department. Responsibilities include proper entry of specimens into the company’s computer system, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and distribution of these specimens to the proper analytical area.

This includes responsibility for pre‑ and post‑analysis stages. The position will also perform specified analytical testing as assigned and follows the guidelines of the Code of Conduct. All functions are performed according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards.

CORE FUNCTIONS
  • Specimen collection, general laboratory specimen processing, or referral laboratory processing while ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity. In IOP locations, manage client relationships within compliance regulations to meet customer needs and Sonora Quests’ business objectives.
  • Enter and verify patient demographics, location, physician data, tests requested, time and date of collection, appropriate clinical information, and all other pertinent data from requisitions and computer‑generated orders. Verify accuracy of entered information and appropriateness of specimens received. Aliquot and label specimens according to departmental procedures, deliver specimens to the technical area promptly, and/or perform initial processing and preparation of samples for transport.

    Assist in monitoring workflow and training new employees.
  • Focus on quality by ensuring all work performed is accurate and complete, completing documents legibly, following established methods and practices, and maintaining familiarity with departmental procedures. Use appropriate documentation to record communications, generate reports as required for patient reporting and quality assurance monitoring, and meet departmental standards for productivity and quality. Actively participate in committees or Six Sigma teams and maintain acceptable specimen rejection rates.
  • Participate in departmental financial responsibilities through appropriate use of supplies and materials, avoid excessive waste, and participate in initiatives to reduce costs and improve service. Basic knowledge of billing and commitment to an error‑free work environment.
  • Communicate courteously and professionally with internal and external customers. Interact with co‑workers with an emphasis on teamwork and customer service. Resolve basic service issues, attend meetings, and stay current with internal/external communications.
  • Acknowledge and understand the importance of ‘Patient Rights’ and privacy (HIPAA).

    Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently. Required to lift, push, and/or pull up to 25 pounds. Requires manual dexterity and use of standard precautions due to exposure to blood and body fluids, chemicals, electrical and biological hazards. Ability to distinguish colors and quickly assimilate instructions. Requires use of computer, printers, copiers, telephone, fax, and department‑specific equipment.
