Job Title: Medical Assistant

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Practice Manager or designee, this position provides professional, age‑specific care for patients, collaborating with physicians and other disciplines. The role promotes comprehensive, cost‑effective, and meaningful healthcare across a diverse patient population, performing patient care and technical tasks for neonates through geriatrics in the back office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Update and maintain patient electronic health records.
  • Record patient information, including vital signs (weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature).
  • Verify medical history and medication changes at each appointment.
  • Prepare examination rooms: clean, stock, and set up before patient visits.
  • Dispose of expired medication and exam room supplies.
  • Perform point‑of‑care testing (urine and capillary blood sticks).
  • Interpret and translate (English/Spanish) as necessary.
  • Conduct HIV and family‑planning counseling.
  • Dispense contraceptives following AFHP protocol.
  • Assist in various medical procedures.
  • Triage and process messages from patients to physicians.
  • Process telephone encounters for patient questions and medication refills.
  • Provide provider‑directed instructions to patients.
  • Follow up with providers and patients on abnormal test results.
  • Update ASIIS program daily for all administered vaccines.
  • Understand Title X family‑planning services and sliding‑fee discount schedule requirements.
  • Dispense birth control as ordered.
  • Perform SVN, PEEK FLOW, Audiogram, Spirometry, Nebulizer procedures, and Snellen test.
  • Participate in evening clinic as needed.
  • Provide one‑on‑one training to externs and volunteers.
  • Serve as Lab MA when required.

Qualifications
  • Knowledge of laboratory tests, terminology, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of specimen collection and quality‑assurance procedures.
  • Ability to perform injections and vaccinations.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
  • MA certification from an accredited program.
  • One year of MA experience preferred but not required.
  • CPR with basic life‑support card in good standing.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) required.
Additional Skills
  • Read and comprehend simple instructions; write simple correspondence.
  • Effective presentation of information to individuals and small groups.
  • Mathematical ability: perform basic arithmetic, compute percentages, interpret graphs.
  • Reasoning ability: apply common sense to written or oral instructions, handle simple problems.
  • Computer skills: MS Office, eClinical

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Moderate noise levels. Tasks involve frequent standing, walking, sitting, reaching, stooping, kneeling, and occasional lifting of up to 25 lb. Vision and hearing requirements include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
