The Swim Lesson Instructor, under the supervision of the Aquatics Manager, is responsible for conducting swim lessons to enhance the swimming abilities of participants across all age groups. The primary focus is to create a safe, enjoyable, and educational environment for program participants.
Essential Job Functions- Conduct swim lessons following assigned curriculum plans to ensure proper skill development.
- Instruct participants on water safety and enforcing pool area rules.
- Communicate effectively with participants for scheduling private and partner lessons as well as distributing informational materials.
- Provide regular updates to the supervisor on participant progress, including recommendations for Swim Level changes.
- Organize and maintain class equipment, inspect before and after use and report any issues to the supervisor.
- Participate in in‑service training sessions as required.
- Maintain punctuality and meet job performance requirements, including but not limited to attendance and tardiness standards.
- Perform related tasks as required.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of lifesaving methods and procedures, including first aid and standard resuscitation measures.
- Familiarity with swimming pool area policies and procedures.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with fellow instructors, supervisors and participants of all ages.
- Proficiency in various strokes, including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Assignments will be based upon knowledge level (and successful demonstration of knowledge level) of each individual instructor.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Quick and effective response in emergency situations.
- Physical ability to perform swim lesson instruction.
Work environment takes place in both indoor and outdoor settings depending on assignment. Pool environment involves risks or discomforts requiring special safety precautions. Subject to noise, heat, moisture and humidity. Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small‑average sized child. Flexibility in scheduling including evenings and weekends is required.
Experience & CertificationsMinimum age requirement of 16 years. Current ARC First Aid/CPR/AED certification required within 60 days of hire. Prior Swim Lesson instruction experience preferred but not required. Completion of a student teacher period before achieving full status.
Pay RateVariable pay rate depending on both experience and lesson type.
Base Rate: $10.59/hour (to be paid during student teaching period, trainings and in‑services)
Private Lesson Rate: $15 - $20/lesson (half hour)
Group Lesson Rate: $20 - $27/lesson (50 minutes)
