Summary Description Of Classification
At the direction of the principal, this para educator performs a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well-being to support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP). The para educator may participate with students in learning activities off school grounds and assist students with academic, behavioral, social, emotional, and physical support. The job focuses on facilitating student mastery of grade-level curriculum or Alternate Academic Achievement Standards and managing behaviors that affect access to the curriculum.
Students supported may participate in general education classes and/or specialized instructional settings and may be pulled out for individualized or small group reinforcement. This position also performs instructional and classroom management supports, as well as related clerical tasks to support teachers and other staff in all classrooms or learning environments. All new para educators are hired at a grade 15 and may promote to a grade 16 after completing a six-month probationary period and the required training hours.
Physical demands include bending, walking, and lifting of objects/equipment up to 50 pounds. Outside duty may be required, with flexible scheduling and potential changes of location or program as needed. Continues planned instructional activities during a teachers temporary absence and may require specific training to fulfill the role.
The wage range for this position is between $25.40 and $38.15 per hour, based on years of service. Benefits information is available in the benefits document referenced internally.

- Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and policies of Montgomery County Public Schools.
- Ability to assist with implementation of the instructional program and monitor appropriate student behavior.
- Ability to exhibit patience and work effectively with children, young adults, and staff.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and to perform all required tasks.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to read/write/speak English and to interact with and support students with special needs.
- Knowledge of standard computer hardware and software such as Google Workspace, MS Office, and web-based instructional tools.
- Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn and meet the seven core competencies of the SSPGS.
These requirements are listed in order of preference.
- 1. Associate’s degree, required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Coursework should include a minimum of nine credit-hours related to education (e.g., behavior management, instructional strategies). One year of experience with students in structured educational settings preferred. If no related coursework, two to four years of experience with children and adolescents in a structured setting (e.g., daycare, pre-school) is required.
- 2. At least 48 college credits and two years of experience in a structured setting (e.g., daycare, pre-school, adult day program, after-school program, extended day, or school/non-school based departments).
- 3. Two years of experience in a structured setting (e.g., daycare, pre-school, adult day program, after-school program, extended day, or school/non-school based departments).
- 4. Successful completion of the Para Pro Assessment with a qualifying score of 455 or higher is required.
- 5. Any combination of applicable education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills to perform effectively may be considered.
