Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of City vehicles and equipment; diagnoses mechanical defects; repairs and reconditions gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles; performs diverse preventative maintenance; and responds to emergency service needs. Work is predominantly performed indoors.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair City-owned vehicles and equipment, including automobiles, light- and heavy-duty trucks, fire apparatus, ambulances, snow plows, and specialty equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrication, fluid replacement, filter changes, brake inspections, tire service, and safety checks.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, steering, suspension, drivetrain, and HVAC systems.
  • Utilize computerized diagnostic tools and equipment to identify electrical and system defects.
  • Road test vehicles to locate operational problems and verify the effectiveness of repairs prior to returning equipment to service.
  • Perform cutting, grinding, welding, and metal fabrication as required for repair assignments.
  • Respond to emergency or after-hours calls for vehicle inspection, repair, or towing as required to support critical City services.
  • Maintain accurate service, maintenance, and repair records, including work orders, labor hours, and parts usage.
  • Identify and report apparent vehicle or equipment abuse, neglect, or safety concerns to supervisory personnel.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in accordance with OSHA standards and City safety policies.
  • Participate in ongoing training to remain current with evolving vehicle technologies, equipment, and repair practices.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Fire and Emergency Vehicle Responsibilities

When assigned to Fire Department fleet support, the Fleet Mechanic may:

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair fire apparatus, ambulances, emergency response vehicles, and related equipment.
  • Support the service of emergency vehicle systems, including braking systems, electrical systems, auxiliary power, and safety-related components.
  • Coordinate with Fleet Services leadership and Fire Department staff to prioritize vehicle readiness and minimize downtime.

Emergency vehicle certifications and specialized training are preferred but not required at the time of hire.

This is medium to heavy work requiring the exertion of up to 80 pounds of force occasionally, up to 40 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly. Physical activities include climbing, stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping. Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of garage methods, shop practices, and tools used in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Working knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and computerized vehicle controls.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions and determine appropriate corrective actions.
  • Skill in the safe use, operation, and care of tools, machinery, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and respond efficiently to emergency vehicle servicing situations.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate maintenance and service records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and establish positive working relationships with City personnel.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and employ precautionary measures in all work activities.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of documented consecutive current experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment, preferably in a municipal, fleet, or public-sector environment.
  • Experience with emergency vehicles, heavy-duty equipment, or public safety fleets is preferred.
Licenses, Certifications and

Special Requirements
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL Class A with air brake and tanker endorsement within six (6) months of hire.
  • ASE certifications and/or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications preferred.
  • Ability to furnish and maintain required personal hand tools.

This is a general automotive fleet mechanic role. Placement, assignment, and day-to-day work locations may be adjusted at the City’s discretion based on operational needs, staffing, and service demands across the City’s fleet.
