The Police Officer reports to an assigned supervisor and performs shift‑work that may include nights, weekends, overtime, rotating shifts, and holidays. Duties are conducted at any campus location as needed. The role protects life and property on campus, responding to prevention and detection of crimes, maintaining law and order, patrolling, traffic enforcement, accident reporting, and criminal investigations. Assignments are received from superior officers under established policies and procedures, requiring independent judgment, initiative, and sound decision‑making in emergency situations.
The officer conducts patrols, assists investigations, and prepares reports, meeting all relevant regulations and instructions from supervisors. The officer must work any shift assigned. Applicants must complete a pre‑employment drug test, polygraph or CVSA, credit check, criminal background check, and psychological test before being hired.
- Conduct routine patrols on foot and by vehicle across campus grounds, buildings, and parking areas to detect and deter criminal activity, hazards, and policy violations.
- Operate a motor vehicle during day and night, including high‑speed emergency situations and driving in adverse weather.
- Respond promptly to non‑emergency and emergency calls, accidents, and incidents, coordinating with emergency services when needed.
- Enforce campus policies, regulations, and applicable laws by issuing warnings, citations, or making arrests as necessary.
- Use independent judgment to determine reasonable suspicion for detentions, probable cause for searches and arrests, and appropriate use of force.
- Investigate incidents, crimes, or complaints, collect evidence, interview witnesses, and collaborate with other law enforcement agencies.
- Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including traffic direction, administering emergency medical aid, and evacuating people.
- Build positive relationships through outreach, education, and collaborative efforts that promote safety and trust.
- Maintain accurate, complete reports of daily activities, incidents, arrests, and other relevant information.
- Participate in ongoing training, workshops, and certification courses to improve knowledge and readiness.
- Comply with Campus Security Authority responsibilities under the Clery Act.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Citizen of the United States.
- Valid Georgia driver’s license.
- No felony or disqualifying criminal convictions.
- Georgia POST Basic Law Enforcement certification or ability to obtain one within one year of employment.
- Current Georgia POST Council Basic Law Enforcement certificate in good standing.
- Advanced or specialized Georgia POST Council training certificates.
- Knowledge of standard police practices and techniques.
- Knowledge of Georgia criminal and traffic laws.
- Knowledge of university properties, population, and traffic control problems.
