Overview
Fairview has an exciting opportunity for a full time, day shift Cytogenetics Technologist in the Cytogenetics (CG) department at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center-East Bank. This position will work Monday through Friday, with every 3rd weekend and a holiday rotation. This position is eligible for a Sign On Bonus of up to $5500 (amount pro-rated based on FTE).
Our Cytogenetics department is a local leader in pioneering chromosomal and genomic technologies for the diagnosis and management of both inherited disease and cancer. The Cytogenetics lab serves a diverse patient population and is recognized as a national leader in areas such as bone marrow transplantation. The hospital is established as a rare disease center of excellence. The 40-member Cytogenetics team performs specialized testing including tissue culture processing, chromosome microarray, FISH, and G-banding chromosome analysis to obtain results that guide patient care.
All teams collaborate to provide high quality patient care and integrated patient result reports.
- The Tissue Culture Team is responsible for specimen receipt, culturing and harvesting of specimens. They provide stained slides for G-band chromosome analysis and cell pellets for FISH processing.
- The Microarray Team handles specimen receipt, DNA extraction and microarray processing including DNA restrictions, labeling and slide hybridization/washing for Microarray data.
- The FISH Team prepares slides and probes, performs slide hybridization and wash, and analyzes probes using a fluorescent microscope.
- The Chromosome Analysis Team analyzes G-banded Neoplastic and Congenital Chromosomes using computer software and/or a brightfield microscope.
- In joining the Cytogenetics lab, you will be assigned to one or more laboratory teams based on experience and laboratory needs.
- Essential functions include: follow guidelines to obtain specimens and prioritize work; perform a wide variety of complex diagnostic and therapeutic testing; recognize problems and take appropriate corrective actions; evaluate testing results for accuracy and appropriate intervention; understand and commit to Laboratory Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement, and Laboratory Compliance Programs; orient and mentor new employees and students; perform other duties as assigned.
Education
- Baccalaureate or higher degree in a related laboratory field with practicum or equivalent meeting qualifications as high complexity testing personnel per CLIA ’88.
- Baccalaureate degree in Biology, Chemistry, Genetics, Medical Laboratory Science, or Molecular from an accredited college/university and successful completion of NAACLS‑accredited cytogenetics program (Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided); OR
- Baccalaureate degree with 30 semester hours in biology and chemistry (Transcript must be provided); OR
- Master’s degree in genetics or molecular biology (Diploma with field of study or transcript must be provided).
- Eligible for Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved Cytogenetics certification within 12 months and obtain within 24 months of hire.
- ASCP or ASCPi – CG
- Baccalaureate degree in Biology, Chemistry, Genetics, Medical Laboratory Science, or Molecular from an accredited college/university and NAACLS‑accredited cytogenetics program (Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided).
- Cytogenetics experience in G-bands, FISH, Micro Array
- Possess Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification at time of hire.
- ASCP or ASCPi – CG

CompensationAn individual pay rate within the posted range may be determined by factors including skills, knowledge, education, experience, and market conditions. If eligible for a sign-on bonus, the approved program at the time of offer will apply. Pay is subject to internal considerations and equity.
