Primary Function:
The High School Counselor provides a comprehensive, student-centered counseling program that supports the academic achievement, career readiness, and social-emotional development of all students. In alignment with the Georgia Department of Education School Counseling Framework, the counselor collaborates with administrators, teachers, families, and community stakeholders to deliver services that promote college and career preparedness, improve student outcomes, and ensure equitable access to educational opportunities for every student.

Qualifications:

* A Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in Guidance and Counseling, Social Work, Education, or related field. A Maste's degree or higher is preferred.

* A Georgia professional certificate as a guidance counselor.

* Knowledge of child development- specifically of physical, emotional, and developmental patterns.

* A team player with experience working in a collaborative environment.

* Ability to listen to and communicate with parents and see parents as a resource.

* Possesses conflict resolution skills.

* Possesses positive personal attitude and skills.

* A minimum of two years of successful counseling experience is preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Provide leadership for the implementation of school counseling program at the district level with a specific focus on college and career readiness and social and emotional learning.

* Provide leadership for the integration of school counseling programs and services with current PK-12 curriculum at individual buildings related to college and career readiness and social and emotional learning.

* Advocate and implement initiatives for, the elimination of barriers to access and equity to a rigorous education for all students.

* Collaborate across the district with counselors, building administrators, and school mental health team members related to college and career readiness and social and emotional learning in order to facilitate planning and upscaling of current systems.

* Provides, develops, and leads professional learning for all district counselors in consultation with the Director of Student Services.

* Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and works with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation.

* Remains readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding and maturity.

* Takes an active role in interpreting the school's vision and mission to students, parents, and the community at large.

* Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the student personnel services department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.

* Supervises the preparation and processing of college scholarship and employment applications.

* Initiates, assembles, maintains, and interprets accurate health records, attendance records, cumulative progress records, activity records and uniform transcript records for assigned students.

* Interprets test results and interests of individual students to teachers in an effort to assist teachers in meeting student's individual needs in the teacher's instructional program.

* Serves as a member of the registration team on school scheduling.

* Conducts follow-up studies of former students to facilitate evaluation of the total school program.

* Conducts continuous evaluation of the counseling program.

* Participates in activities to keep abreast of significant developments in our changing society.

* Interprets the program of guidance services to parents and community organizations.

* Organizes and conducts an annual "Career Day."

* Work with students on an individual basis for the solution of personal problems related to such issues as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.

* Provides in-service training in guidance for teachers and student teachers.

* Advises administrators and faculty on the matters of student discipline.

* Perform other duties as assigned.
