Summary
National Power is accepting applications to fill a Generator Service Technician opening in our Charleston, SC market. Under the general direction of and reporting to the CISV Service Manager, the Generator Service Technician is responsible for maintenance and repair of generator sets and other electrical equipment.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Perform various types and levels of maintenance and repair on generators and parallel systems ranging from 5-5000kw, including troubleshooting and repair of Automatic Transfer Switches (bypass isolation and closed transition types). Repairs include performing preventative maintenance services (oil and filters), troubleshooting AC and DC circuits, removing and replacing components as necessary, performing warranty work per manufacturer’s guidelines, and performing start-up/commissioning on new generators and generator systems.
- Perform diesel or gaseous engine troubleshooting and repair, including ignition components, injection systems, valve adjustments, etc.
- Perform load bank testing on generator(s) to ensure units operate under prosper conditions and meet applicable code requirements.
- Assist other technicians with large multi‑person jobs or troubleshooting complicated issues.
- HS Diploma required;
Associate degree in an electrical/mechanical related field preferred. - Current Generac Power Systems certification preferred.
- US Air Force Electrical Power Production Specialist, US Navy Electrician’s Mate, or Generator and/or UPS field service technician preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, able to give verbal/written reports of job status, repair recommendations, and equipment/supplies needed.
- Ability to account for time spent on jobs and travel.
- Excellent driving record and valid driver’s license; the job will require driving long distances to job sites and overnight stays in hotels (1‑3 nights, possibly up to a week).
- Good computer skills, comfortable with Microsoft software (Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, Adobe PDF).
- Work from home, ensuring proper vehicle maintenance, required parts inventory, and security of company property (cell phone, laptop, specialty tools).
- Managing difficult or emotional customer situations; responding promptly to customer needs; soliciting feedback; meeting commitments.
- Good problem‑solving during emergency situations or limited-resource scenarios.
- Will receive training; may be required to attend training courses in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and other locations as needed.
- Demonstrates accuracy, thoroughness, and continuous improvement, applying feedback to improve performance and safety.
- May need to work in various weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, high humidity, etc.).
- Frequently work near moving mechanical parts.
- Lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 75lbs.
- Ascending or descending ladders, scaffolding, stairs, and ramps.
- Seizing, holding, grasping, and turning with hands.
- Entering text or data into computer or other machine with a keyboard.
- Pushing/pulling with hands, arms, feet; use of one or both sides of the body.
- Moving on hands, knees, or feet to enter restricted spaces.
- Operating controls on machinery (pedals, buttons, levers, cranks).
- Clear vision for small objects or reading small print, including computer use.
- Sitting for long periods may be required.
- May need to move on hands and knees or hands and feet in confined spaces.
- Competitive pay depending on experience and certifications; overtime paid at 1.5 X base.
