Job Summary:

Under direct supervision, provides support in addressing the health needs of students; assists in implementing the school health program; administers medication, first aid, care, and comfort to students, as stipulated by district health policies and procedures. Reports to the lead nurse, school nurse, special services department, and school principal.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a state-approved Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program and passing of the required examination
  • High school diploma with previous health related experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Must be willing to maintain certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) in accordance with the standards of the American Heart Association
  • Participation in pre-service training provided by a designated Registered Nurse at the school. Attends annual updates provided by the Lead Nurse
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as district administration may find appropriate and acceptable

Essential Duties:

  • Support students with daily living activities, including personal hygiene, grooming, mobility assistance, toileting assistance, specialized feeding, and other personal care tasks as needed
  • Monitor and document students’ health status, including vital signs, symptoms, and changes in condition, and communicate findings to the School Nurse in a timely manner (Promptly notifies the school nurse and appropriate administrator(s) in the event of a medical emergency)
  • Provide professional care tasks, including administering medications and performing basic medical procedures under the supervision of the School Nurse, following all applicable guidelines and regulations
  • Takes and records the accurate temperature, and if trained, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and other symptoms presented by the student, as necessary Following school policies and procedures for contacting parents when student(s) are hurt or are too sick to stay at school
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment for students, ensuring that appropriate equipment and supplies are managed effectively
  • Communicates effectively with the school nurse, staff and parents regarding student health care needs and concerns (Maintains appropriate communication with teachers regarding their students - treats all information on students with confidentiality)
  • Assist with the safe transportation of students to and from school, adhering to safety protocols and ensuring their well-being during transitions
  • Promptly reports suspected instances of child abuse and/or neglect to DSS and/ or Law Enforcement as required by applicable laws and district policies and procedures. Promptly reports incidents such as fights, suspected substance abuse, possession of weapons, etc. to school administration
  • Provides first aid to ill or injured students - performs specialized treatments, after training by the registered nurse and return demonstration of skill(s), as directed by the school nurse (e.g. gastrostomy-tube feedings, emergency tracheal suctioning, intermittent urinary catheterization, etc.) for students with specifically identified health care needs
  • Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and support the implementation of individualized health care plans as part of the IEP team
  • Educate and support students in self-care practices and health-related topics to enhance their independence and confidence
  • Collaborate with the Special Education Teacher, school staff, families, and external health care providers to deliver comprehensive and continuous care for students
  • Maintain accurate documentation of care provided, including interventions, outcomes, and any changes in students' conditions
  • Stay informed on current health policies, procedures, and best practices related to special needs care to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations
