About the team you are joining
The Assistant Director, Associate General Counsel (AGC) - Commercial Law (CL) is a senior legal professional with significant knowledge, skills, experience and expertise in relation to commercial law relevant to IATA’s programs, standards and services. The AGC-CL is responsible for providing advice and support on complex legal risks, negotiations and strategies in relation to support IATA’s Programs, Standards and Products and Services.
The AGC – CL demonstrates managerial expertise and has direct managerial responsibility for the commercial legal team in the Standards and Programs Workstream. The AGC – CL reports to Director Legal Services (Deputy General Counsel) Standards and Programs.
The AGC - CL provides independent legal advice on diverse substantive and procedural questions of considerable complexity, through the following activities:
- Provides independent advice on substantive and procedural questions of considerable complexity, which may include the interpretation or application of law, legal instruments, or legal principles in relation to IATA’s commercial activities, contracts and other agreements.
- Responds to requests for legal assistance from clients and work assignments referred by Deputy General Counsel or General Counsel.
- Manages, leads and mentors direct reports as well as having supervisory and primary responsibility for direct reports’ work product and work assignments, to ensure performance aligned with IATA’s statutory obligations and strategic objectives.
- Member of the leadership team of the Standards and Programs Workstream and collaborates closely with the Deputy General Counsel and General Counsel on management issues relating to the Legal Team.
- People management responsibility for the team.
- Peer reviews the work of other team members.
- Contributes to the development of team members.
- Work collaboratively across the legal team, with the DGCs and AGCs on substantive legal matters and to change, develop and implement improvements within and across the Legal Work streams.
- Leads client relationships on relevant Workstream portfolio work.
- Leads the development of training and guidance material on various topics.
- Delivers training to IATA staff.
- Delivers presentations to airline members and other external audiences in various IATA governance council meetings, taskforces and working groups.
- Manages, instructs, and approves the budget for external counsel in accordance with LSCS team processes.
- Monitors and reviews performance of external counsel.
- Collaborates with other LSCS team members across the work of LSCS and with IATA staff, external counsel and airline members.
- Communicates directly with IATA staff, external counsel, and airline members.
- Maintains strong relationships with specialist legal communities relevant to IATA’s work.
