Job Description
The Substation Manager - Transmission & Distribution is responsible for overseeing day-to-day substation construction activities while ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, and project execution. This role leads on-site construction efforts, coordinates with engineering, EPC contractors, and stakeholders, and ensures all work is performed in compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and industry standards. The Substation Manager supports construction through commissioning and energization while maintaining clear documentation and communication throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Prioritize and enforce job-site safety protocols, ensuring compliance with OSHA and industry safety standards
- Manage and coordinate daily substation construction activities with engineers, contractors, and project stakeholders
- Perform site inspections, maintain QA/QC documentation, and audit construction quality against approved drawings and specifications
- Review and interpret electrical schematics, civil, mechanical, and structural steel drawings
- Maintain accurate records of construction activities, safety inspections, progress reports, and material usage
- Lead and supervise construction teams, monitor performance, provide feedback, and resolve on-site conflicts
- Identify, assess, and mitigate construction risks and field issues to keep projects on schedule
- Coordinate with EPC contractors to resolve RFIs and manage change orders
- Oversee material take-offs and support material procurement activities
- Ensure familiarity and oversight of concrete works including flat foundations, drill piers, breaker pads, GSU containment pits
- Support commissioning activities and turnover through energization
- Conduct post-project reviews and document lessons learned and improvement opportunities
- Promote open communication and teamwork across field personnel and leadership
- Strong experience in substation construction management within transmission and distribution projects
- Extensive knowledge of electrical substation equipment
, drawings, and construction practices - Thorough understanding of construction safety regulations and hazard mitigation
- Ability to safely work near energized equipment at hazardous voltage levels
- Proficiency in QA/QC processes
, construction documentation, and reporting - Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, Project) and construction-related software
- Physically capable of working in hazardous environments and lifting construction tools and materials
