Job Description & How to Apply Below

You’ve worked hard for your QTS. Now you deserve a start that builds you up, not burns you out.

Protocol Education is working in partnership with a wide network of supportive, well‑led primary schools across Gateshead who are seeking Early Career Teachers for flexible supply work and short‑term placements.

Working hours are 8.30am to 3.30pm, term time only
.

If you’re not ready to commit to a permanent contract straight away, agency work offers a smart, strategic and confidence‑building way to begin your teaching career.

Why Consider Agency Work as an ECT?

Your first teaching role shapes everything, your confidence, your classroom presence, your resilience, and your long‑term career decisions.

Flexible supply work allows you to:

  • Experience a range of school environments before committing
  • Discover which key stage suits your strengths
  • Develop behaviour management skills in varied settings
  • Build professional confidence gradually
  • Avoid excessive planning demands in your first term
  • Maintain control over your workload

There is no obligation to accept work you do not want. You choose your availability. You decide when you are ready for something longer‑term.

Many of our ECTs secure permanent contracts in schools they’ve previously worked in through supply, after building strong relationships and proving their strengths.

What You’ll Actually Be Doing

As a flexible supply ECT in Gateshead primary schools, you may:

  • Deliver pre‑planned lessons across EYFS, KS1 or KS2
  • Maintain classroom routines and behaviour expectations
  • Adapt quickly to new learning environments
  • Build positive relationships with pupils and staff
  • Gain exposure to different phonics schemes and curriculum approaches
  • Leave clear and professional handovers for returning teachers

You’ll focus on teaching and relationship building, without the heavy administrative demands that often come with permanent posts.

The Career Benefits You Gain

Starting your career through agency work strengthens your profile by helping you:

  • Demonstrate adaptability and resilience
  • Gain wide‑ranging curriculum experience
  • Develop confidence in unfamiliar settings
  • Strengthen your CV with varied school experience
  • Build a professional network across Gateshead schools

Schools value teachers who can walk into a classroom and confidently take control. Supply experience builds exactly that.

What We’re Looking For
  • UK Qualified Teacher Status
  • ECT status
  • Strong understanding of the primary curriculum
  • Positive and adaptable approach
  • Commitment to safeguarding and inclusive education
