Senior Library Assistant

Gateshead Libraries and Heritage Service offers free access to books and computers from 8 libraries across Gateshead. We deliver a cultural programme of activity to residents of all ages, including author events, family activities, talks and creative workshops. Our heritage collection is held in Gateshead Archive and includes books, maps, photographs and newspapers documenting the history of the borough.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, motivated and friendly Senior Library Assistant to work across our network of libraries. The contract is permanent and for 22 hours per week. Senior Library Assistants may be asked to work in any of our 8 libraries and may split their time across three different locations. The role includes evening work until 7pm one day a week and alternate Saturdays until 1pm.

• Support the delivery of the full range of library and heritage services from within library buildings and across the wider community, engaging with customers of all ages to promote reading and borrowing of books.
• Develop and deliver promotional library events and activities as part of the team, including class visits, rhymetime and creative sessions.
• Supervise library assistants and work as part of a team to deliver an effective day‑to‑day service. You may be required to lone‑work for short periods and have responsibility for opening and locking library buildings.
• Provide IT support and information to library users and signpost them to other services as relevant. Assist library users with complex needs and, occasionally, deal with challenging behaviour.

• Knowledge of books and reading, and experience of public libraries or a similar environment.
• Effective communication by phone, e‑mail and in person, and a commitment to delivering excellent customer care.
• Competent IT skills, including use of the internet, e‑mail and Microsoft Office programmes.
• GCSEs in English and Maths at Grade A‑C or 9‑4 (or equivalent).

• Competitive salary of £26,824 to £28,142 per annum (pro rata to 22 hours).
