Job Summary:

GM Performance Power Units (GM PPU) is seeking a skilled and motivated Import/Export Specialist to join the Warehouse and Logistics Team. This role is responsible for coordinating and managing the movement of goods across international borders. This role ensures compliance with all applicable customs regulations, optimizes logistics operations, and maintains accurate documentation to support smooth import and export activities. The specialist works closely with the suppliers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and internal teams (Transportation Specialist) to drive efficiency, cost control, and timely delivery of goods.

The role will create standardized processes and procedures for all international shipments, ensuring compliance with global trade regulations, improving documentation accuracy, and enhancing overall shipping efficiency.
This position requires extensive knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations, Incoterms, HTS classification, and international shipping processes. This role requires the experience and expertise support of a high-performance engineering environment and critical support function GM PPU’s manufacturing, assembly, and development of our Formula 1 power unit in addition to our partners and suppliers around the world.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate international shipments from origin to destination, including booking cargo, preparing shipping instructions, and tracking deliveries.
  • Create commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, bills of lading, and customs declarations.
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. Customs regulations, international trade laws, Incoterms, and partner country requirements.
  • Collaborate with freight forwarders, carriers, and customs brokers to resolve delays, documentation issues, and customs holds.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of trade regulations, tariff classifications (HTS, Schedule

    B), duty rates, and free trade agreements.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and communicate impacts to leadership and cross functional teams.
  • Support data analysis to drive continuous improvement in global supply chain processes.
  • Lead/participate in Kaizen/CI projects—network design tweaks, packaging optimization, mode shifts, consolidation.
  • Ensure DOT/FMCSA, hazmat, C-TPAT, and customer compliance.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of warehousing and logistical processes and documentation standards.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, International Business, Logistics, or related field (preferred).
  • 3–5+ years of experience in import/export operations, customs compliance, or international logistics.
  • Solid understanding of U.S. Customs regulations, Incoterms, HTS classification, and international shipping processes.
  • Experience working with freight forwarders, customs brokers, and global carriers.
  • Experience with both domestic and international shipping - strong knowledge of fundamentals (routing guides, freight classes, accessorial, claims).
  • Experience with ERP (Experience with IFS Cloud is a plus).
  • Strong proficiency Excel and data analysis skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation discipline, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, ability to work in a team, important for collaborating with various departments and addressing inventory-related issues.
  • Self-driven with a proactive approach to process development, continuous improvement, and learning.
Nice to Have Qualifications
  • Advanced Certifications to include Certified Customs Specialist (CCS), Certified Export Specialist (CES), or IATA/FIATA freight training.
  • Experience in production and manufacturing setting or within motor sports or high-performance environments.
  • Prior involvement in continuous/process improvement (LEAN, Six Sigma, or continuous cost improvement).
  • Familiarity with business intelligence / reporting tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau) for inventory analysis.
  • Flexibility to work flexible shifts and extended hours to support operational needs.
  • Familiarity with FIA regulations.
