Recovery Transporter

The mission of Gaston County Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) is to preserve and enhance the quality of life for the residents and visitors of Gaston County by providing superior quality Emergency Medical Service.

An hourly salary range of $16.87 to $19.61 is anticipated for this position.

The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform.

• Responsible for the safe transportation of passengers to and from scheduled medical appointments. Utilizes GEMS Recovery Transportation program to provide micro-transit and scheduled needs to support health and well-being of clients while connecting clients to opioid disorder treatments and recovery centers.
• Participate in community outreach events as requested, which may include evenings & weekends.
• Generate daily passenger transportation schedules and confirm with patients, schedulers/practice managers. Report any malfunctions or needed repairs to the transportation manager. Notify scheduler if any rider does not show. Comply with all traffic regulations, report delays, accidents, or other traffic and transportation situations to the proper personnel or scheduler. Submit fuel receipts daily.
• Read maps, and follow written and verbal geographic directions; be able to utilize a route mapping app.
• Provide assistance to passengers, including but not limited to assistance with boarding and deboarding, fastening/unfastening seat belts, etc.; regulate heating, lighting, and ventilation systems for passenger comfort; keep the vehicle(s) clean, inside and outside.
• Inspect vehicles prior to beginning of a route and at the end of shift; inspecting for any service or maintenance concerns. Responsible for getting fuel at the propane and fueling stations. Report any vehicle malfunctions or needed repairs to the EMS Captain.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Graduation with a High School diploma or GED equivalency required.
• Minimum of two years of driving experience required.
• A valid NC Driver's License is required. Possess a driving record with no reckless or driving under the influence convictions and/or moving traffic violations in the past five (5) years.
• Have attained or be willing to obtain the certification as a Certified Peer Support Specialist or Recovery Coach within three months of hiring.
• Must be willing to obtain first aid and CPR certification upon hiring and must be willing to provide basic first aid, including Naloxone (Narcan) administration.
• Having a working telephone at place of residence is a necessity for this position.
• Must be bond‑able, courteous, dependable and able to relate to people of all ages and economic and ethnic backgrounds.

Candidates selected will undergo a background check. The candidate selected must undergo and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.

In compliance with G.S. 153A-94.2(b), if the position being filled requires an applicant for employment to work with children in any capacity, the County must require the applicant, if offered the position, to be subject to a criminal history record check conducted by the SBI. These checks must be performed in accordance with G.S. 143B-1209.26, which authorizes the SBI to provide fingerprint‑based state and national criminal record checks to cities and counties.
