General Definition of Work
Electrician I
Performs technical work in the maintenance, repair and trouble-shooting of electrical and electronic components for City facilities; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over a small crew.
Electrician II
Performs intermediate technical work in the maintenance, repair and trouble-shooting of electrical and electronic components for City facilities; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over a small crew.

Electrician III
Performs difficult technical work in the maintenance, repair and trouble-shooting of electrical and electronic components for City facilities; does related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the assigned supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over a small crew.

Essential Functions/Duties

Electrician I, II & III
  • Trouble-shoot electrical components (25%)
  • Repair and replace outdated electrical components (20%)
  • Install new electrical circuits (20%)
  • Discuss job requirements with and receive instructions from supervisor (5%)
  • Inspect for National Electrical Code violations (5%)
  • Develop work assignments based upon priorities (5%)
  • Requisition necessary equipment and materials (5%)
  • Maintain time and materials records (5%)
  • Train and instruct unskilled and semi-skilled workers (5%)
  • Serves on the emergency on-call rotation (5%)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Electrician I
General knowledge of the installation, repair, troubleshooting, and replacement of all electrical components associated with general municipal building facilities, including water and wastewater treatment and pump station equipment; general knowledge of the National Electrical Code, skilled in the use of all diagnostic equipment to successfully repair electronic components, ability to prepare reports, ability to read and understand electrical schematics and line diagrams.

Electrician II
Thorough knowledge of the installation, repair, troubleshooting, and replacement of all electrical components associated with general municipal building facilities, including water and wastewater treatment and pump station equipment; thorough knowledge of the National Electrical Code, skilled in the use of all diagnostic equipment to successfully repair electronic components, ability to prepare reports, ability to read and understand electrical schematics and line diagrams.

Electrician III
Comprehensive knowledge of the installation, repair, troubleshooting, and replacement of all electrical components associated with general municipal building facilities, including water and wastewater treatment and pump station equipment; comprehensive knowledge of the National Electrical Code, skilled in the use of all diagnostic equipment to successfully repair electronic components, ability to prepare reports, ability to read and understand electrical schematics and line diagrams.
Education/Experience/Physical Demands/Special Requirements/Additional Information

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Electrician I, II, III
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's degree in electronic technology, or related field and moderate experience in the maintenance of automated electrical or electronic control systems, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Electrician I

NIMS 100, 200, and 700 training certificates within 12 months of hire.
Possession of a Journeyman Electrical License.
The employee must pull permits in his/her name or the license must be signed over to the City of Gastonia.

Electrician II
NIMS 100, 200, and 700 training certificates within 12 months of hire.
Possession of a limited North Carolina Electric license upon hire.
