Role Overview

The ITS & Traffic Operations Engineer Associate is part of the implementation, operation, and ongoing maintenance of transportation technologies used across the Traffic Management Department. The selected candidate will assist in managing the state's arterial and freeway systems by hands‑on use of both hardware and software tools that keep traffic moving safely and efficiently. Responsibilities include oversight of implementation plans, supporting the installation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices, and contributing to Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) strategies.

This role offers on‑the‑job training and experience with cutting‑edge technologies and innovative strategies that are new to the state, providing an excellent opportunity to build technical skills and grow professionally. The incumbent will develop expertise in the design, function, and operation of roadway software, hardware, and field systems.

Additional responsibilities include helping maintain the statewide ITS architecture, supporting the rollout of research and pilot projects, and participating in the development, deployment, and operation of advanced software applications used for traffic management and system operations.

Engineer Trainee

A Professional Engineering license is not required for this position. Candidates who have an Engineering degree but do not hold a professional license may be hired at a lower minimum salary and are eligible for promotional increases upon achieving milestones, including passing the EIT exam, years of experience, and obtaining their professional engineering license. Upon obtaining an EIT the salary traditionally starts at an annual salary of $67,314 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

This position is located in INDOT’s Central Office, Technology Support Department.

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $75,010.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day In The Life
  • Planning & Project Management:
    Serve as a resource for proposal development and research process. Ensure milestones, deliverables, and implementation strategies, are established accurately. Assist supervisor in the development of strategic planning and resource utilization. You will participate in providing project reviews in accordance with the Agency’s established performance standards. Ensure that all plans reflect the scope of services, existing field conditions, appropriate design standards, and sound engineering judgment.
  • Program Management:
    Coordinate programs and plans for the division/department; interpret laws, regulations, and guidelines within area of assignment; review program plans for completeness, economic and technical feasibility.
  • Design and Research:
    Assist in the development of programs, research development & technology plans (road maps) to improve product quality. Review research proposals and report to ensure their accuracy, effectiveness, and potential for implementation.
