Summary
This position qualifies for the Veterans Health Administration Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan repayment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet VHA policy eligibility and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amounts (up to $200,000) and eligibility periods (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application.
Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
The applicant must meet the basic requirements and any additional qualifications listed in the announcement. Pending completion of training or license requirements may be referenced and tentatively selected, but the applicant may not be hired until all requirements are met.
- United States citizen (non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).
- Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from a VA-approved school.
- Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
- Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Residency programs approved by ACGME, AOA, or other accredited programs with a minimum of five years of verified U.S. practice (as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee).
- Physician residents currently enrolled in an accredited residency training program are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs) on an intermittent or fee‑basis.
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians; they are not independent practitioners and may only perform duties under supervision.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills in a team environment.
- Preferred experience:
Board certification and/or completion of residency in Internal Medicine or Family Practice/Family Medicine. - Experience in outpatient primary care.
- Physical requirements:
visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, manual dexterity; ability to walk, stand, stoop, sit, bend, pull, push; ability to transfer patients and objects; exposure to infectious materials; occasional exposure to combative patients. - Must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations and shifting priorities based on stakeholder needs.
- Primary care physician within Ambulatory Care responsible for performance and documentation of health care delivery for Veterans according to VHA and Durham Health Care System standards.
- Fully qualified and certified to function in both a clinical and administrative role in accordance with the guidelines and policies of the Durham Veterans Affairs Health Care System.
- Delegate authority and responsibility to assume major clinical, consultative, educational, research, and administrative duties related to Veteran care.
- Independent clinical evaluation of Veterans through a panel of patients, including prevention and patient self‑management.
- Provide comprehensive primary care to male and female Veterans, including diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases, health promotion, disease prevention, and ensuring health maintenance is up to date.
- Conduct physical examinations and formulate evidence‑based treatment plans with shared medical decision‑making.
- Maintain clinical knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive primary care services to male and female patients.
- Provide care in many modalities, including direct face‑to‑face care, virtual care (telephonic, video, secured messaging, and others).
- Function as a member of a Patient Aligned Care Team, collaborating with clinical and administrative support to provide timely, quality, coordinated care for Veterans.
- Utilize and promote approved standards of care, procedures, methods, and techniques, safety precautions and protocols in all settings.
