Job Description:

This job posting is a "Pool" position. There may or may not be openings at this time; when an opening occurs, the hiring manager will draw from the pool of applicants on file as needed. Applicants will not be notified of status unless contacted to interview, which might occur soon after applying or as much as a year later.

General Statement of Duties

Tutor students in the Prison Program in subject areas of math, English, and business. This position helps students make academic progress while promoting independent learning and self-reliance. Tutors who can assist in multiple subject areas are in demand. Provides individual and small group tutoring. Assists in training new tutors. Maintains active and current tracking for tutoring services provided to students. Provides other services as requested by the Director of Academic Support Services and Testing Services.

Tutors chosen for this position will be required to enter Massachusetts Correctional Institute, which will function as an off-campus location for MWCC. The classroom will follow all standards and expectations found on traditional campuses.

For applicants who meet the minimum entrance requirements, the Commonwealth may review later in the application process, if applicable:

• Criminal Offender Record Information (C.O.R.I.) and;

• Sex Offender Registry Information (S.O.R.I.) and;

• The Central Registry of Child Abuse/Neglect under M.G.L. chapter 119, section 51B.

Responsibilities

  • Provides individual and small group tutoring in the Prison Program.
  • Ability to assist multiple students concurrently.
  • Use appropriate learning techniques/strategies to achieve learning outcomes.
  • Help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
  • Use questioning to determine the focus of tutoring sessions.
  • Demonstrate good communication, listening, and patience.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of general and subject-specific study strategies and learning approaches.
  • Provide examples of best practices for completing assignments in subject matter.
  • Encourage students to learn by finding information/answers; does not assist with tests or quizzes.
  • Assist in training new tutors.
  • Sit in designated areas to help students and remain in tutoring area during scheduled shift/appointment.
  • Maintain professional and ethical boundaries in the student/tutor relationship.
  • Maintain records of student use by completing departmental forms and paperwork; assist MWCC students only.
  • Attend CRLA trainings each semester; continuous professional development is expected.
  • Review materials regarding tutoring practices and Academic Support Center handouts for accuracy.
  • Remain current with course expectations to best assist students (e.g., current citation formats, computer textbook tools).
  • Understand college offices and departments to make referrals for students (librarians, advising, etc.).
  • Check MWCC staff email regularly and complete timesheets weekly by the deadline.
  • Limit personal device use to emergencies and follow policies on headphones.
  • Refer student concerns to the Director of Academic Support and Testing Services.
  • Maintain student confidentiality according to FERPA regulations.
  • Other services as requested by the Director of Academic Support and Testing Services.
