The City of Garden Grove is accepting applications for the Building Inspector position. Join our Building Inspection team! High-rise hotels, multi-family residential units, and numerous ADUs make this a unique opportunity. We are seeking dependable, organized, and team-oriented individuals with a passion for community impact who want to create a legacy of excellence. Under general supervision, Building Inspectors inspect buildings and structures in all stages of new construction, alterations, or repairs to enforce related building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, energy conservation, green building, and disabled access regulations.

- Conduct field inspections of building construction, mechanical, plumbing or electrical installations to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations for residential and commercial properties.
- Maintain files, reports, and records for inspection activities.
- Prepare written notices summarizing violations and identifying applicable code sections.
- Perform minor plan reviews for code and ordinance compliance.
- Provide building code information to the public.
- Investigate complaints and violations of building codes.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
Graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the G.E.D. (General Educational Development) exam AND one (1) year of full-time experience in conducting building inspections and/or enforcement is required.
Other Requirements
- Must possess a valid California class C driver license and maintain an acceptable driving record (three or fewer DMV points in the past five years and no more than one DUI in the past ten years).
- Possession of at least one ICC certification at time of application:
International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Plumbing Code, International Mechanical Code, or International Electrical Code. - Designation as a Certified Access Specialist (CASp) is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Abilities & Skills
- Knowledge
:
Building materials and modern construction methods;
California state and/or Uniform codes; energy, green building, and disabled access regulations;
Titles 24/25 of the California Code of Regulations; and related construction principles and electrical, mechanical, plumbing installations. - Ability
:
Understand and apply codes, read and interpret plans and specifications, perform arithmetical calculations, communicate effectively, provide quality customer service, and work safely to perform the physical demands of the job.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Stand, walk, climb ladders and scaffolding, reach, lift, and perform other physical activities required for field inspections.
- Work in various environments and conditions (outdoor/indoor, potential hazards, noise, heights, confined spaces, and dusty or dirty environments).

- The selection process includes: performance exam (virtual via eSkill, March 5–12, 2026) and an oral panel interview (tentatively March 26, 2026). Applicants may incur a parallel in-person testing option for identity verification.
