General Description
The purpose of this class is responsible for the operation of heavy equipment to assist in the construction, repair and maintenance of county streets, drainage systems, beaches, and related infrastructure.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Operates and maintains road paving construction equipment, including motor graders, rollers, loaders, tractors, dump trucks, tandem dump trucks, backhoes, water trucks, paving machines, and reclaimers.
- Operates haul truck, including load, tie down, and transport of equipment.
- Patches roadways, cuts brush, and picks up and disposes of trash and brush.
- Loads and unloads large amounts and weights of materials and debris to and from trucks.
- Drives a medium-sized truck to transport personnel, supplies, and materials.
- May flag traffic as needed.
- May perform housekeeping and facilities maintenance functions.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Requires a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Requires one year of experience in construction, maintenance, or repairs of roadways, bridges, and operating heavy and light construction equipment or closely related experience.
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Unavoidable hazards are job conditions that may lead to injury or health risks even when precautions have been taken.
The work is typically performed sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.
The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery, and chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Special Certifications and LicensesMust possess and maintain a valid state commercial driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
Ability and willingness to complete IC§S 100, 200, 300, and 400 after hire
