General Description

The purpose of this class is to monitoring mosquito populations and determining proper control methods and times.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Conducts field surveys throughout the county to observe and location mosquito activity; analyzes and compiles surveillance data to predict mosquito populations and future hatches.
  • Assigns spray schedules and confers with Director on aerial spraying and mosquito predictions.
  • Maintains computer operational database, maps and manuals. Maintains mosquito control website.
  • Compiles environmental data obtained from rain gauges, marshes, and wind/temperature conditions; integrates this data with surveillance data.
  • Takes blood samples from chickens for arbovirus testing. Assists in trapping for arbovirus surveillance.
  • Answers telephone and maintains log of complaint calls.
  • Maintains daily data and generates annual report for EPA water discharge permit.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires Bachelor’s degree in biology, entomology or related major.

Requires two years of experience in the collection of mosquito and mosquito larvae or closely related experience.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

The work is typically performed sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.

The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery, chemicals and wildlife. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Emergency Preparedness Tier Level: 3

Special Certifications and Licenses

Requires Texas Department of Agriculture non-commercial pesticide license within six months of employment.
