The Director is responsible for a variety of administrative and financial matters in the overall management of the department/division/area, including financial resource management, administrative activities, and people management. The role requires the ability to respond to complex decisions with minimal direction and to address issues that impact or impede operations. Responsibilities include coordination and implementation of departmental financial process improvement initiatives and serving as liaison to Finance leaders and Institutional Department Leads.
Responsibilities- Manages the daily activities of the staff and ensures compliance with UTMB policies and procedures.
- Provides staff development, including creation of formal training and development programs.
- Provides financial accountability and oversees budgetary information, ensuring compliance with state, university, and external funding agency guidelines.
- Ensures staff are knowledgeable on award terms and conditions for proper grant administration.
- Responds to financial inquiries and budget variance reports from the Provost’s Office.
- Performs monthly departmental account reconciliations against Hyperion reports.
- Assists with operational decisions and develops strategic long‑term plans to assure fiscal growth and accountability.
- Collaborates with and responds to inquiries from the Academic Enterprise and Institutional areas to ensure operational practices and timelines are met.
- Creates plans to support research mission through operational plans and resource maximization.
- Identifies and evaluates the need for new equipment, supplies, and information services.
- Oversees transitional activities related to organizational and procedural changes.
- Serves as a resource to the dean, department chairs, and administration and liaison to the university and external units.
- Provides assistance to management in implementation of organizational decisions, generating reports and statements.
- Supports emergency operations planning and participates in leadership emergency team.
- Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related area plus six (6) years of directly related experience.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a high degree of professionalism.
- Competence in dealing with a variety of individuals including physicians, researchers, and university leadership.
- Strong analytical skills and a proactive approach to problem resolution.
- Ability to plan, organize, set and accomplish goals.
- Supervisory and management skills to effectively direct support staff.
- Facilitation, coaching, mentoring, feedback skills.
- Excellent decision‑making skills.
Commensurate with experience.
Working Environment / Equipment- May be exposed to occupational hazards such as communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, ionizing & non‑ionizing radiation, hazardous medications and disoriented or combative patients.
