General Description
The purpose of this class is responsible for the daily operation, repair and maintenance of the seawall flood control system of assigned stations.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Operates and maintains assigned county pumping stations and floodgates.
- Operates closure structures inside petro-chemical facilities.
- Operates and maintains tractors, mowers, dump trucks, wrench truck and other equipment in the completion of department activities.
- Maintains and repairs assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Maintains and repairs generators, pumps, floodgates, levee entrance gates, poles and cable gates, and signs.
- Maintains department facilities and pumping stations, including painting, pitching, patching, welding and cleaning.
- Responds to after-hours emergencies.
- Provides field maintenance of all flood protection areas, includes mowing, weed trimming, vegetation removal, and herbicide control.
- Ensures road maintenance on levee, litter pick up, wire rope repair, pothole patching and other work orders called in by the public are completed.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Requires a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Requires one year of experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of flood control systems or closely related experience.

The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs and operates tools or equipment.
The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery and chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Special Certifications and LicensesMust possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid state class A commercial license with a Tanker Endorsement and an acceptable driving history.
