Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree in environmental, natural, or applied science, or related field, and 7 years of related experience. Must complete 24- or 40-hour HAZWOPER certification within 6 months of hire.
Preferred QualificationsMaster’s degree in environmental, natural, or applied science, or related field with 7 years of related experience. One or more of the following licenses or certifications:
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager (CHFM)
- Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP)
- Certified Fire Inspector (CFI)
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
- Registered Environmental Manager (REM)
Provides advanced professional knowledge and expertise to develop and support staff members within the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) department.
Job DutiesThis position will be responsible for Life Safety compliance on campus with a team of 3 direct reports to include organization and management of inspections, management of findings, coordination of schedules, training, and program development. Other responsibilities will include policy development, performance trending, and reporting.
- Ensure UTMB campuses and clinics meet all environmental health and safety and Life Safety regulatory requirements as measured through audits and compliance inspections by both internal and external agencies.
- Provide technical, team lead support to junior staff, including coaching and oversight on matters related to NFPA code compliance.
- Supervises, coaches, develops, and evaluates assigned direct reports.
- Initiate Life Safety audits to ensure compliance with the design of the facility.
- Monitors the effectiveness of multidisciplinary problem resolution activities.
- Initiate benchmarking activities.
- Coordinate agency audits.
- Recognize politics associated with various aspects of multidisciplinary projects.
- Anticipate, develop, and implement methods needed to remain state-of-the-art in the field.
- Develop others through assignments, formal training, or other experiences—assist staff with how answers are derived.
- Keep current in the fire and Life Safety field and immediately utilize and apply new information fully.
- Identify problems or non‑compliance issues. Know, understand, and identify all areas of expertise needed to resolve problems and then coordinate a team of those with the needed expertise.
- Monitor and take actions on projects to ensure completion.
- Provide expert knowledge of diverse chemical, physical, and biological hazards.
- Recommend and/or develop action plans for problem resolution.
- Constantly seek opportunities for process improvement.
- Review proposed state and federal regulations and develop appropriate comments to be conveyed to UTMB, UT System, and external regulatory agencies.
- Foster a learning environment of trust with internal and external customers by fulfilling commitments and maintaining programs in accordance with applicable standards.
- Chair subcommittees and lead task forces.
- Act as a Health and Safety advisor to non‑safety‑related committees.
- Provide specific positive feedback to aid in the development of others and express positive expectations for future performance.
- Interpret rules, regulations, and guidelines with scientific knowledge and analytical methods to conclude appropriate decisions that may be considered innovative or leading‑edge.
- Coordinate and provide interface for multidisciplinary functions within EHS and across all UTMB Health properties.
- Participate in the emergency on‑call program.
- Adhere to internal controls and reporting structure.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Detailed experience with EHS site audits, inspections and routine surveys including the developing and drafting of audit documentation, tracking corrective actions, and monitoring results through completion of audit activities.
