Job SummaryTo maintain an attractive, sanitary, and safe facility and ensure a clean environment for students, staff, and the public by cleaning designated areas, using cleaning materials and equipment, and minimizing property damage, loss, and liability exposure.
Essential Duties- Cleans assigned school facilities (e.g., classrooms, offices, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, grounds, cafeteria, storage areas) to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
- Arranges furnishings and equipment to prepare meetings, classroom activities, and special events.
- Attends service training (e.g., blood borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, maintenance training) to receive information on new and improved procedures.
- Evaluates situations involving staff, students, parents, and the public to take appropriate action or direct personnel for resolution.
- Inspects school facilities to ensure safe operations, cleanliness, and identify necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, or weather.
- Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g., cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops) to ensure availability for proper maintenance.
- Paints interior of classrooms, offices, restrooms to maintain an attractive facility.
- Repairs furniture and equipment (e.g., faucets, toilets, light fixtures) to ensure availability and safe working condition.
- Responds to immediate safety and operational concerns (facility damage, injuries, alarms) to resolve and maintain a functioning educational environment.
- Secures facilities and grounds to minimize property damage, equipment loss, and potential liability.
- Ensures all emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, and playground equipment are maintained in working condition regularly, per local, state, and federal regulations.
- Removes snow and ice from designated areas.
- Regulates furnaces and other heating systems, including air conditioning and ventilation, replacing filters as necessary.
- Empties trash and garbage containers and disposes to designated areas.
- Raises and lowers required agency flags daily.
- Haul trash, mow grass, chop weeds, and trim shrubs.
- Assist other personnel in completing their work activities.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
- Equivalence to completion of twelfth grade – High School Diploma or GED.
- Some general custodial experience desirable.
- Valid New Mexico driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
- Basic operational characteristics of a school district housekeeping program.
- Basic principles and practices of housekeeping duties.
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Basic mathematical principles.
- Learn equipment use and care, storage, record keeping.
- Learn to operate basic housekeeping equipment and machinery (e.g., vacuum cleaner, carpet cleaning equipment).
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely in writing and orally in English.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.
- Maintain mental capacity to make sound decisions and demonstrate intellectual capabilities.
- Maintain physical condition appropriate for assigned duties and responsibilities.
On-site attendance is mandatory. Essential and marginal functions may require moderate to extremely heavy carrying, lifting, and pushing; reaching, climbing, crawling, kneeling, standing, and walking for extended periods; operating motor vehicles; and subject to random drug testing.
Environmental ConditionsOffice, shop, and school environment; exposure to cleaning and/or sterilization chemicals, airborne particles, and vibration; exposure to loud noise and outdoor weather conditions.
