Position: Grounds Assistant Main Campus, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd., Galesburg

  • Reports to:

    Assistant Coordinator of Grounds Services
  • Principal working relationships:
    Director of Facilities, Assistant Coordinator of Maintenance Services, Assistant Coordinator of Custodial Services, Vice President of Institutional Resources, staff, faculty, and students.

Primary responsibilities

  • The removal of snow, ice, and debris from all parking lots, sidewalks, and roads.
  • Mow lawns, trim shrubbery and trees, cut weeds, and maintain landscaping.
  • Service and repair all equipment used in ground maintenance.
  • Supervise subordinates for ground maintenance.
  • Move equipment to and from storage.
  • Maintain yard and exterior lighting.
  • Be available to work overtime and outside regular hours when necessary.
  • Respond to urgent issues outside of regular hours as needed.
  • Utilize Sandburg vehicles/trailers for picking up materials and delivering scrap metal as required.
  • Service fleet vehicles.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate:

  • Painting of curbing.
  • Installation and maintenance of traffic control signs.
  • Placement and repair of roadside informational signs.
  • Assist with:

  • Moving furniture and equipment.
  • Setting up equipment for events.
  • Procurement and disposal of welding metals for the industrial division.
  • Maintaining exhaust fans.
  • Replacing fluorescent lamps and ballasts.
  • Furniture and equipment repairs.
  • Assessing grounds services.
  • Establishing departmental KPIs based on the strategic plan.
  • Risk-management and loss-prevention activities

  • Maintain knowledge of college emergency procedures and participate in risk management programs.
  • Monitor conditions and circumstances that pose risks, intervening or reporting as specified in the risk-management plan.
  • Minimum necessary education, skills, and experience

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Good electrical and mechanical skills.
  • Illinois pesticide operator’s license within the first year.
  • Forklift license preferred.
  • Experience with power equipment like tractors, mowers, chainsaws, and snow removal tools.
  • Experience with power hand tools.
  • Supervisory experience with several subordinates.
  • Effective communication skills with diverse populations.
  • Spanish or French proficiency preferred.
  • Physical requirements

  • Ability to perform arduous work.
  • Lifting capacity of 50 lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Work outside in environmental conditions.
