Overview

NIST is seeking a highly skilled Research Scientist to join the Fundamental Electrical Measurements Group. This role focuses on the development of next-generation quantum electrical standards to provide measurement traceability to the International System of Units (SI) through natural physical constants. The successful candidate will lead research in quantum electrical metrology and the realization of fundamental electrical units using advanced quantum phenomena.

Appointment shall be made through a local University or the University of Maryland, College Park.

Key Responsibilities
  • Graphene Research:
Lead the fabrication and characterization of graphene-based quantum Hall effect devices for high-precision metrology.
  • Advanced Metrology:
Research and realize the quantum ampere by integrating the quantum Hall effect and the Josephson effect.
  • Collaborative Research:
Work alongside NIST teams specializing in quantum computing and qubit arrays to advance quantum measurement science.
  • Instrumentation Design:
Develop low-noise, high-speed readout electronics for specialized electrical metrology experiments.
Required Qualifications
  • Citizenship: US Citizenship is required for this position.
  • Education:

A PhD in Metrology or Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Expertise:
Demonstrated experience in quantum electrical standards and the SI system.
Technical Skills & Experience
  • Cryogenic Systems:
Proficiency with dilution refrigerators, He-3/He-4 wet cryostats.
  • Nano-fabrication:
Hands-on experience with electron beam lithography, optical lithography, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and atomic layer deposition.
  • Instrumentation:
Advanced use of lock-in amplifiers, high-precision multimeters (e.g., Keysight 3458A), and Wheatstone bridges.
  • Data & Programming:
Ability to process complex datasets using MATLAB, Origin, or Igor Pro, and experience with programming languages such as C or VHDL.
Preferred Achievements
  • A strong record of peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Physical Review B, Nature Electronics, or IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement.
  • Experience presenting research at international conferences like the APS March Meeting or the Conference on Precision Electromagnetic Measurements (CPEM).
