Salary: $85,000-$90,000 a year

PREP Research Associate
CHIPS Funded Project.

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest and thus requires that such institutions be the recipients of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas.

Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

Research Title

Postdoctoral researcher

The work will entail

Work with an interdisciplinary team to develop the experimental tools necessary for the characterization of scintillation materials in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength regime. Once tools are online, candidate will calibrate the tools and conduct measurements of scintillator materials for a final report.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
  • Conduct literature review of candidate EUV scintillator materials and develop report based on review.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team to construct, calibrate, and operate a scintillator characterization tool(s).
  • Interact with NIST staff to develop mechanical design of components for an ultra-high vacuum synchrotron end-station using CAD software.
  • Run, optimize, and document data acquisition codes (LabVIEW and Python)
  • Aid NIST staff in developing plans for integration of characterization systems into existing SURF III beamlines.
  • Prepares written reports and documentation for sample measurement, operation of instrumentation and safety.
  • Provide input for CHIPS quarterly progress reports.
Qualifications
  • Ph.

    D. in physics, Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with the following:
    • Optical metrology instrument and detector design,
    • X-ray and/or EUV instruments,
    • Visible or UV microscopy experience,
    • Use and development Data acquisition hardware and software (LabVIEW and Python),
    • Statistical data analysis.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Purpose

The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) hosts the Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) which is designed to provide valuable laboratory experience and financial assistance to undergraduates, post-bachelor's degree holders, graduate students, master's degree holders, postdocs, and faculty.

PREP is a 5-year cooperative agreement between NIST laboratories and participating PREP Universities to establish a collaborative research relationship between NIST and U.S. institutions of higher education in the following disciplines including (but may not be limited to) biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, electronics, materials science, mathematics, nanoscale science, neutron science, physical science, physics, and statistics. This collection of information is needed to facilitate the administrative functions of the PREP Program.

NIST will use the information collected to perform the requisite reviews of the applications to determine eligibility, and to meet programmatic requirements.
