PREP Research Associate
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requiring that such institutions be the recipients of a PREP award. The PREP program seeks staff from diverse backgrounds to work on scientific research across many areas.
Employees in this position will perform technical work supporting the scientific research of the collaboration.
The position is suitable for a graduate student or recent PhD graduate experienced in applied data science, to work with mathematicians and experimentalists at NIST on forensic chemometrics and uncertainty quantification in mass spectrometry identification and classification. The goal is to develop improved classification algorithms and incorporate uncertainty quantification into models to provide valuable information. The role requires interdisciplinary collaboration, involving regular communication between modelers and experimentalists.
The work will include:
Key responsibilities:
- Implementing optimized calculations for AI classification algorithms
- Assessing uncertainty in experimental data classification
- Testing mathematical models related to uncertainty quantification
- Software development (primarily in Python)
- Disseminating results via posters and seminars
- Proper archiving and transmission of results, data, and software
Qualifications
- Completed master's or PhD in data science or related field
- At least 1 year of data science research experience
